The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously approved to extend the terms of city commissioners at its meeting Tuesday evening.
The terms of the appointed members of the city’s Planning Commission; Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission; Arts Commission; and Open Space Preservation District Financial Accountability and Audit Panel, or FAAP, will be extended by five months.
With this action, appointees with terms of office expiring on July 31, 2016 would be extended to Dec. 31, 2016, while appointees with terms expiring on July 31, 2018, would be extended to Dec. 31, 2018.
The extension is in response to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approval to move the Santa Clarita City Council election to November of even numbered years on Mar. 24, 2015.
To be consistent with the change in Santa Clarita City Council terms, the terms of the appointed commissioners for the city will run through December 31 of the fourth calendar year after the appointment date or until their successor is appointed, according to Tuesday’s agenda.
If an appointment is made mid-term, the appointed member will fill the remaining term for the position, according to Tuesday’s agenda.
Each member is nominated by a city councilperson and the appointment is made by the entire Santa Clarita City Council.
Appointments made by the city council to the Library Board of Trustees, Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control Board of Trustees and North County Transportation Coalition are not affected by the move of the election date and will remain unchanged, according to Tuesday’s agenda.
A second reading of the ordinance will be presented to the Santa Clarita City Council on Nov. 24, 2015.
