College of the Canyons softball scored its go-ahead run in the third inning, then held on the rest of the way for 2-1 victory over Moorpark College at Whitten Field on Tuesday, March 3.
Canyons (11-8) used the victory to snap a five-game losing streak in its final contest before conference play begins later this week.
The Cougars were led by freshman hurler Anais Perez, who was making her 10th consecutive start dating back to Feb. 10, when she took the circle for the second game of a doubleheader vs. Santa Barbara City College.
On Tuesday, Perez limited the Raiders’ lineup to four hits and just the lone run in her seven innings of work. Perez (6-5) also walked a pair of batters but was otherwise in control throughout.
COC plated the game’s first run on Jasmine Soriano‘s RBI single in the first which brought in Jeniece Jimenez.
Moorpark (6-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of a third on an RBI fielder’s choice before Perez ended the frame with two runners stranded on base.
Later in the inning, Soriano reached base on a Moorpark error, which allowed Jimenez to score the go-ahead run at 2-1.
Jocelyn Jimenez, Soriano and Amber Phillips were the only Cougars to record hits in the game. In addition to scoring both runs, Jeniece Jimenez walked twice and stole a pair of bases.
Abrial Ramirez (0-4) suffered the loss for Moorpark. The Raiders have now dropped back-to-back games.
Canyons travels to face Citrus College at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in the Western State Conference, South Division opener.
