p.ink day 2015Breast cancer survivors will get the opportunity  to get some personal ink on P.ink Day this weekend in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

P.ink Day, or personal ink day, is happening in 13 cities across the United States and is going to be lead by Kari Suarez with Holly Feneht as the artist at The Gilded Lily in Newhall on October 9, according to a press release from the organization. Tattoos are by appointment only.

The event aims to educate breast cancer survivors about mastectomy tattoos as an alternative healing option to reconstructive surgery. The event also connects survivors up with tattoo artists who can help.

“P.ink Day is about providing an amazing experience for breast cancer survivors, which culminates with a mastectomy tattoo to help them reclaim some of the personal property that breast cancer stole,” said Noel Franus, founder of P.ink. “This is our grassroots approach to creatively addressing the difference between being cured and being healed.”

Local leaders, many of whom were tattoo recipients or tattoo artists at a previous P.ink Day, are leading each of the 13 P.ink Days.

These leaders help facilitate this one-of-a kind experience by connecting survivors in their hometowns with experienced artists. The first P.ink Day took place in October 2013 at Saved Tattoo NY with 10 artists and 10 survivors, according to the release.

P.ink Day will occur across the 13 cities on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday on the weekend of October 10th. The public will be able to follow along all weekend in real-time by visiting http://p-ink.org/p-inkday .

P.ink was created and is maintained by a team of volunteers, most of whom worked together at CP+B, the ad agency in Boulder, Colorado that seeded P.ink’s initial efforts. What started off as a passion project on Pinterest and YouTube in 2013 has grown into a movement that’s changing the culture of healing.

As the conversation about mastectomy tattoos has grown, P.ink has gained traction and a global following. Today, the independent organization is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)(3) charity, and P.ink’s team leads event coordination, product development and marketing. In addition to organizing P.ink Day in North America, P.ink also organizes the P.ink Fund which pays experienced tattoo artists to provide mastectomy tattoos the other 364 days of the year.

P.ink is securing 501(c)(3) status and will be expanding internationally in 2016. Email help@p- ink.org with questions or comments.
