[KHTS]- The Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club presented a check for $10,000 to the Triumph Foundation at its Wednesday meeting after a fire destroyed the foundations entire inventory in June.
Founded in 2008, the Triumph Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help individuals with spinal cord injuries overcome the challenges that come with paralysis, according to the foundation’s website.
“The fire was devastating,” said Andrew Skinner, the founder of the Triumph Foundation. “It felt like a big kick in the gut.”
When the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club got wind of the fire and the toll it took on the Triumph Foundation they took it upon themselves to lend a hand.
The Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club has been involved with community outreach for the past 50 years.
The Rotary Club’s $10,000 donation came from a sum of $6,500 dollars that they took from their corpus, a $500 Rotary Club member donation and a $3,000 donation from an anonymous club member.
When the Triumph Foundation’s entire inventory was destroyed by the fire, “the Rotary Club really felt bad for them because they’re a huge asset to this community,” said Michael Berger, the president of the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club.
After the Rotary Club spoke with Skinner, he said the Triumph Foundation needed $10,000 to keep their services going. The Rotary Club decided to give him the entire sum.
The atmosphere at the check presentation was jovial. Members laughed, joked and clapped for speakers while lunch was served.
After the check was presented to Skinner, the mood took a slightly more reserved tone.
“This is a big deal,” Skinner said. “I’m having trouble smiling because my lip is quivering.”
The Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at Marie Callender’s to discuss announcements, fundraisers, community service, events and listen to speakers from within the Santa Clarita community.
Also present at the meeting on Wednesday was Rotary Club District 5280 Governor DJ Sung.
Rotary Club District 5280 includes Bellflower, Downey, Malibu, Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Burbank and Glendale.
There are 63 clubs in District 5280, which includes over 2,500 members.
