[KHTS] – Santa Clarita’s “Vision 2020” State of the City 2015 luncheon attracted hundreds of local leaders to learn more about projects the city has in plan for the next half decade.
The “Back to the Future” themed event was held at the Hyatt Regency Valencia where guests listened to Santa Clarita City Council members and watched video presentations.
The event began with a welcome by Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin, followed by introductions by Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Janelle Percy, former U.S. Air Force Major, evaluator and instructor pilot and an invocation was led by Pastor Melissa MacKinnon of Santa Clarita Methodist Church.
There were a few special announcements made at the State of the City.
Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean revealed that earlier in the day Thursday, representatives from the Amgen Tour of California formally announced selected cities for the 2016 race. Santa Clarita will host the Stage 2 Finish for the 2016 Amgen Tour of California.
“This will mark the 12th stage Santa Clarita has hosted since 2007,” said McLean, “giving us the distinction of hosting more stages than any other city in California.”
The race will take place in Santa Clarita on May 16, 2016.
Santa Clarita City Councilman Dante Acosta also announced that Saddle Ranch Chop House restaurant will be moving into the Westfield Valencia Town Center.
“In Santa Clarita we enjoy a thriving, diverse community of informed and engaged residents,” said Striplin. “City employees are dedicated to promoting a culture of service excellence, creativity and entrepreneurship. Santa Clarita enjoys a strong, financial position rooted in time tested principles of responsible financial management. These guiding principles and strategies align our spending with the vision and goals of our city.”
The “Vision 2020” themed luncheon provided updates on topics such as the filming in Santa Clarita.
The Santa Clarita Film Office continues to break records for location and studio filming, according to a pamphlet handed out at Thursday’s luncheon.
The city’s film office reported the highest numbers ever in all categories since the office began issuing permits in 2003. Many television shows, such as ABC Family’s “Chasing Life” and “Switched at Birth,” as well as HBO’s “Westworld” and NBC’s “The Player,” are filmed locally.
During this year alone, 553 permits have been issued and the filming has had a total economic impact of $33.9 million.
The event also covered upcoming projects and programs, such as the Old Town Newhall redevelopment block.
The Santa Clarita City Council recently voted to move forward with negotiations for the development of the Lyons Avenue and Main Street Corner block of Old Town Newhall.
Proposed plans for the block include a mixed-use retail and residential space, as well as the independent, foreign and art house cinema, Laemmle Theatre.
A parking structure is also envisioned for the block to provide parking for visitors, residents and businesses.
“2015 has been another incredible year of accomplishments and progress for our city,” said McLean.

I didn’t hear about this but would have liked to attend. Contrary to the mess just south of us, Santa Clarita has a great future. The one thing that worries me is over-development of the SCV. The pace of road building is just not matching the pace of new residential construction. The traffic in West L.A. is intolerable. It is getting that way in the San Fernando Valley. As much as I love our Valley, I’m happy that I will retire within the next few years and have the option of moving elsewhere.
