Our county’s parks are vital, but Proposition P saddles all property owners in Los Angeles County with an additional tax hike that is not needed.

The county currently has $150 million in unallocated park funds, and property owners are already funding parks under two other measures passed in 1992 and 1996. One of these measures will generate $28 million per year for park improvements until 2018.

Proposition P proponents say it’s for reducing crime and making our neighborhoods safer – but the money raised from it can be spent only on capital projects, not programs or operations.

This is a hastily conceived measure, lacking in public input or any thoughtful approach to the actual needs of our communities. It was pushed onto the ballot without any public outreach, input or discussion – with little research or engagement with the cities or communities in L.A. County.

The county parks system, its operations and programs will not be subject to any cuts without this new tax – especially given the fact that there are two existing county parks taxes and a $150 million reserve. Vote “no” on P.

Michael D. Antonovich represents Los Angeles County’s 5^th Supervisorial District, which includes the Santa Clarita Valley.
