* On Sunday, May 25, a robbery was reported to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies. The robbery occurred at 12:05 am in the area of Sierra Highway and Via Princessa. The victim reportedly was riding his bicycle on the path close to the wash area when he was surrounded by eight males. One of the males pulled out a handgun and pointed it at him. The males then stole the victim’s wallet, backpack, cell phone, and credit cards. This robbery occurred just after another robbery was reported earlier that same evening, at the same location with similar suspect descriptions.
* On Saturday, May 31, an attempted robbery was reported from the 18300 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country. This incident occurred at approximately 6:00 pm. The victim reported while walking on the bike path in the area he was approached by approximately ten males, one of which pulled out a black handgun and demanded the victim’s money. When the victim stated he had no money, the suspect(s) hit the victim. The suspects then fled the area.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Career Offenders, Burglary, Robbery Apprehension Team (COBRA) detectives assumed control of the investigation in all of the robbery incidents. COBRA detectives were able to identify Raymond Gatica, a 21-year-old male from Canyon Country, as one of the primary suspects in these robbery incidents. Gatica was arrested on June 12, 2014, for his alleged involvement in these robbery incidents and is currently being held without bail pending further court proceedings. Mr. Gatica was the second suspect arrested in these robbery incidents. Today, a 15 year old male was detained and transported to Sylmar Juvenile Hall for his alleged involvement in these incidents.
COBRA detectives have partnered with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) along with station patrol deputies to continue this investigation. COBRA detectives are confident that more arrest will be made on the additional robbery suspect(s) in the future.
It is the goal of everyone at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to send clear message to anyone considering using the paseo systems, bike paths, or trails for unlawful purposes such as loitering, alcohol consumption, drug use, or to commit acts of robbery, that these crimes will not be tolerated. Criminals who choose to break the law and are caught will be arrested.
If you have any further information that can assist detectives in this investigation, please contact Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121. If you would like to remain anonymous, please call the LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
No further information regarding this incident is available at this time.
Deputies always encourage residents to immediately report criminal or suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. We encourage you to stay engaged with helping us keep Santa Clarita safe.

Nice work guys!

I wouldn’t think anything good would happen from riding my bike at midnight by a wash… Just saying

There was another one a week later at 6PM. Just saying.
Well that’s not the one being discussed now is it?
Maybe he was riding home from work? Just saying..
Not in the headline, but if you read the article in its entirety it does!
Poor guy probably can’t even afford a car, maybe even has to ride his bike back home at midnight from his second job, and now he gets robbed at gunpoint by some losers to add to his already difficult life….did you ever consider that??? One should be able to ride his or her bike at any time of day or night without being robbed at gunpoint! Why you’d even hint at putting the blame on the victim is beyond me!

No I did not consider that because I have better things to do with my day then sit around thinking of possible scenarios as to why something happened. No one blamed the victim. You clearly need a hobby that doesn’t include speculation and picking fights on the internet.
Crime can happen at any time and place unfortunately and this guy is lucky he wasn’t killed because there aren’t a lot of ppl riding their bikes by a wash at 12am to witness and possibly help.
The next time u need clarification on a comment u should ask instead of posting a snarky comment.
I hope they get the rest of the “men”.

Losers. It is not very Christian to say this, but I truly think the best thing to do to these thugs would be to shoot them in the head and end the problem.

Reason #6,439 that law-abiding citizens should be allowed to carry concealed firearms. You don’t see this kind of nonsense happening near so much in states and counties where thugs like these know their intended victim might shoot them dead.
Cops can’t be everywhere all the time, but law-abiding armed citizens sure can.
Does it seem like crime is up in Santa Clarita, or is it just me? I’ll be taking a free women’s self defense class this Saturday (11:30) at Santa Clarita Martial Arts, 23333 Cinema Dr. It’s open to the public . . .
I commend you for taking any kind of self-defense class. Be advised that being adept at self-defense against a larger, stronger person (people tend to pick on persons smaller than themselves) requires very serious and continuing training, both physically and mentally. Mindset is as important as skill and technique. AVOIDING potentially dangerous environments and scenarios is even more important.
I have seen and participated in many self-defense classes, some for women, some for Navy SEALs, Delta Force and other SpecOps. I’ve seen it all. Most make unrealistic claims that lure one into a sense of false security. Same goes for defensive handgun training. 95% of it is unrealistic and impractical in an actual gunfight or attack.
Do due diligence who your trainers. Never stop training. Keep a combat mindset (read anything written by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman.)Get a CCW. Stay alive. Learn to protect others.
It only gets worse from here.
P.S. Any self-defense regimen that only teaches stand-up techniques (Krav Maga, Karate) is useless in an actual attack where you’re grabbed and thrown to the ground. If they don’t have serious escape techniques from the ground with a larger attacker on you, save your time and money and go somewhere else. Strikes are very useful, but you will almost certainly end up on the ground. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is perfect for that (though not all BJJ schools are equal either.) Do due diligence.
