[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to reports of a man carrying a gun near Sierra Vista Junior High School on Tuesday, prompting the lockdown of the school as a precautionary measure, officials said.
The reported gun sighting did not occur on campus, and officials would not confirm whether it was related to an arrest on campus that took place Tuesday morning.
The report was called into the Sheriff’s Station by someone who lived near the school, and allegedly saw a man in a burgundy shirt and gray pants with a gun tucked into his waistband, officials said.
It was the second time Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials were at the school in a week, according to school officials.
Sierra Vista officials released a statement Tuesday afternoon confirming an on-campus arrest, but the statement did not disclose the nature of the offense allegedly committed by the student.
“You may hear news today of a student arrest at school this morning that resulted in some concerns with the student after school, off campus, following his release,” the statement read. “Local law enforcement is following up with the student and his family. Students were never in any danger. We want to assure you that the safety of your students is our #1 priority.”
The school had an early-release schedule for staff development, and class had been dismissed when the alleged gun sighting occurred off campus. There were still students on campus for extracurricular activities, according to Sierra Vista students.
The statement did not offer any additional details, other than the student involved was dealt with according to California Education Code.
While several people were questioned in the area, no gun was found, officials said.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials were called to the campus last week after a student put a lighter to a girl’s hair while she was in class.
That incident is also under investigation, but officials would not comment further.

Give me a break. This whole “guns are evil, guns are scary” mentality is just pathetic. Only in California would it be a sight if horror to see someone carrying a gun. Now if it was on school property and unholstered, I would understand the reaction. But come on folks, stop being such babies.

As a parent I do appreciate the safety measures put in place to protect one of the most vulnerable groups in society, which is our children. Better safe than sorry. This is not a gun control issue, but a public safety issue. After the recent school shootings a little caution is not a bad thing.
