College of the Canyons baseball opened up Western State Conference, South Division play with an 11-4 home victory over West L.A. College at Mike Gillespie Field on Tuesday, March 3.
Canyons (7-10, 1-0) downed the visiting Wildcats (3-14) behind 11 hits, including three home runs, and a superb outing from freshman starter Tyler Hawn.
Hawn (4-1) tossed eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts along the way. West L.A.’s Khaleb Romero homered off Hawn in the fourth inning to cut into the Cougars’ lead at 4-1, but the Wildcats were otherwise limited at the plate.
COC answered back with a three-run fourth inning and tacked on four more runs in the fifth to establish an 11-1 advantage.
Reid Farrell‘s home run in the fourth, his sixth of the year, highlighted a day in which the sophomore finished three-for-four, with three runs and four RBIs. His RBI double in the fifth brought in a trio of runs.
Michael Hogen left the yard with a two-run home run in the fourth, while Chris Cailotto sent one deep in the fifth for his third of the season.
Cailotto finished the game two-for-three, with a walk, run and three RBIs. His RBI single in the third inning also scored a pair of runs.
Jacob Bond added an RBI sac-fly in the third to get in on the action. Travis Van Ness enjoyed a multi-hit game and walked with a run scored.
The Wildcats managed to put together a small three-run rally in the ninth but were ultimately turned away when the Cougars handed the ball to reliver Wesley Yim to record the final three outs.
West L.A. starter Isaiah Lopez (1-3) was tagged for the loss after his three innings of work. The Wildcats used four relievers in the game.
The three-game series vs. West L.A. continues Thursday, March 5, in Culver City.
The finale is set to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, back at Mike Gillespie Field. That game is scheduled to be broadcast to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
