A Chatsworth man who pleaded guilty to a Santa Clarita crime spree that included the stabbing of his mother, a series of car thefts, assaulting a peace officer and a kidnapping, had his case continued until February.
Monday’s hearing was to determine the monetary restitution that would be owed for Aaron Clay Tanner, 31, who committed more than $100,000 in damage, according to Lizbeth Garcia of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
“There was no restitution set, so (Tanner) will be due back in court Feb. 7, along with a progress report,” Garcia said. “He’s currently being held in Patton Hospital in Norwalk.”
San Fernando Superior Court Judge David Gelfound found the defendant, Aaron Clay Tanner, to be insane when the crimes were committed. Gelfound formally committed the defendant to the state mental hospital on Nov. 9. Tanner’s sentence was 40 years and eight months, according to Deputy District Attorney Richard Quinones, who prosecuted the case.
Tanner was charged on Dec. 21, 2010, in connection with the crime spree that started on the 14 Freeway near Sylmar and continued on into the Santa Clarita Valley.
The first incident was the non-fatal stabbing of Tanner’s mother, who was pushed from the car. Other incidents included crashing into vehicles, carjacking and crashing a mini SUV with a then 4-year-old child inside. Tanner abandoned his car and fled in the mini SUV with the child inside. He left the boy’s mother behind.
The child, the mother and several Sheriff’s deputies were treated for injuries following the melee. Tanner admitted great bodily injury allegations in four of the 14 charges to which he pleaded guilty.
The defendant, arrested by Sheriff’s deputies after a chase, has remained in custody since his arrest on Dec. 17, 2010.

Lizbeth Garcia of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is confused. Patton State Hospital is in San Bernardino County. The state hospital in Norwalk is Metropolitan State Hospital. Or, does the nut-case have multiple personalities: one at each facility??
