The Castaic Union School District is gearing up to roll out new programs and special events.
Castaic Middle School will be getting a Sports Medicine and a Culinary Arts program in the future.
The Sports Medicine program is unique to the school districts locally, said Charmin Ortega, executive assistant to the superintendent for the Castaic Union School District.
Students will be cooking in a new Culinary Arts program, said Ortega. The Castaic Union School District is coordinating the program with a teacher.
The National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony will also be held at Castaic Middle School on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
“It’s always a great turnout,” said Ortega. “A huge number of kids meet the requirement.”
The Castaic Union School District also hosted the first Next Generation Science Standards Steering Committee Wednesday morning.
The committee consists of teachers and administrators from the William S. Hart, Sulphur Springs, Saugus, Newhall and Castaic school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley.
They are working together to develop a “roll-out” plan for the new Next Generation Science Standards, set to be implemented in the fall of 2018.
Anthony Quan, from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, attended to meeting Wednesday as well to do a presentation regarding the standards, their design and the timeline for implementation.
The Next Generation Science Standards is the science curriculum from the Common Core State Standards, or CCSS.
The CCSS are a set of educational standards that detail what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade, according to Castaic Union School District’s website. California’s State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.
