1910 - Newhall (Auto) Tunnel opens, bypassing Beale's Cut [story]

[KHTS] – A two-vehicle traffic collision on State Route 126, between Fillmore and Piru, resulted in the death of a Fillmore man Tuesday afternoon.

Adrian Cervantes, 31, of Fillmore, was driving in a 2015 Gray Honda Civic on the westbound SR-126 near Hopper Canyon Road at approximately 1:10 p.m. Tuesday when he collided head-on with Robin Meyer, 60, of Fresno, who was driving a 2015 International water truck on the eastbound SR-126.

For reasons under investigation, the Honda crossed over the painted center-median and into the eastbound lanes directly into the path of the water truck, according to Moorpark CHP officer Miguel Duarte. Meyer was unable to avoid the Honda and a head-on collision occurred.

Cervantes was trapped in his car and was rescued by the Ventura County Fire Department, but was later pronounced deceased at the scene, said Duarte.

Ventura County Air Squad 9 responded and landed at the scene, but was ultimately not used, according to Duarte.

Meyer sustained minor injuries and advised he would seek his own medical aid, said Duarte.

The incident resulted in the closure of the westbound and eastbound lanes of the SR-126 for approximately 30 minutes.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and Caltrans responded to the scene and assisted with traffic control.

The collision is under investigation by the CHP’s Moorpark Area office.

Witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP’s Moorpark office at (805) 553-0800.

    • Selena Garcia-lopez says:

He was not on his phone nor was he drinking after work. He left work and was on his way home to pick up his kids. We, his family know neither texting nor being under the influence was a factor in this horrible accident. He had a wife, 2 young children and lots of family. He died on impact and my sister’s life if upside. Her husband is gone. Instead of assuming why don’t you pray for them and remember how precious life is

  3. That’s terrible. My condolences.

  4. After work, have a couple of drinks maybe? Sorry, his family is suffering tonight and I’m praying for them.

  5. Sarah Engel says:

  6. Prayers for the family!

  7. Ruth Bussard says:

Oh my!! What a horrible tragedy! Rest In Peace. So sad.

  8. It always seems as though there are really horrific accidents at that spot. I’ve seen a few there over the past year or so and it’s always been so bad that they had to life flight the victims. ?

  9. The only reason you would cross into on coming traffic is a medical emergency or distracted driving. RIP

  10. scott says:

Really Eric? What about vehicle malfunction (broken suspension member/axle), DUI, asleep at the wheel, horsing around, etc… There are plenty of reasons a vehicle could cross the center line. A low rider on the 5S in the #3 lane broke a ball joint and careened across every lane, narrowly missing all other cars, slamming into center divider in the car pool lane about 20 yds in front of me. Something like that could be possible, no?

  11. No alcohol or other substances in his system. We still don’t know how it happened but please refrain yourselves from assuming that alcohol or drugs were involved. My bf family is in mourning

  12. Lety Diaz says:

Cynthia Gonzalez-Perla am sorry for your loss. Praying for your bf family :(
