Google’s Zeigeist, an annual collection of the year’s top search queries performed, is out.

Using statistics collected since 2001, the annual report divulges the topics and trends that prompted billions to perform searches using the search engine’s site, Google.com.

Searches for “Rebecca Black,” “Google +” and “Ryan Dunn” secured the top three spots on the global queries list and represent topics that mattered most to those on the Internet. Pop star icon Rebecca Black gained media attention earlier this year with her single “Friday” and its accompanying music video.

Fastest Rising

The “fastest rising” lists include the leading items that increased in popularity over the previous year’s statistics. These queries are organized by similar genres into categories used to compare the popularity of the top world-wide searches. The top-ten lists can also be separated by region for consumers interested in specific terms or words that affect certain areas.

Apple Inc. dominated technology category with searches for “iCloud,” “Osx Lion,” “iPad 2,” “iPod Touch 5g,” “iPhone 5” and “Macbook Pro 2011” representing the top six tech-related queries. The report proves the consumer-electronics giant’s strategy of remaining tight-lipped with information about new and updated devices attracts the attention of the masses – leading them to scour the web to find information.

Amazon topped the consumer electronics list with its Kindle Fire tablet. The Android 2.3-powered tablet allows users to purchase and download books, magazines, music, video and more using Google’s fast-growing operating system.

The iPhone 4S came in second, just ahead of the Sidekick 4G and the HP Touchpad. This year’s iPhone also placed second on the “Fastest Rising Google News” list.

For food fanatics, Wendy’s emerged victorious in the food and drink category along with “Just Eat,” “Little Caesars,” and the newest contender, “Chick Fil A.” With more than 6,650 locations, just behind McDonalds (31,000+) and Burger King (12,000+), Wendy’s is the third largest hamburger fast food chain as of March 2010. The fast-food eatery increased its marketing presence this year with the debut of its new sandwich, aptly titled “W.”

In the sports category, “Mayweather Vs Ortiz,” “Soccerstar” and “Dan Wheldon” topped the list.

In the entertainment category, pop star Rebecca Black came in first followed closely by “Ryan Dunn Dead” and “Price Tag Lyrics.”

Fastest Falling

The “fastest falling” list includes trends that significantly decreased in popularity over the previous year’s statistics. This list has a stigma of including topics that no longer appeal to audiences.

“MySpace,” “Hi5” and “Meebo” made the list with social networking site MySpace placing first. The site launched in 2003 and attracted record-breaking subscribers over the course of its first five years in service, but has suffered from declining supporters in recent years.
