Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies conducted parole checks in the early morning hours Friday, following up on local AB 109 parolees Friday and making a pair of arrests.

“We hit 10 locations and we have two people in custody,” said Sgt. Dan Peacock of the SCV Sheriff’s Station.

“One we have in custody for possession of methamphetamine and heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia, and another one was $80,000 in warrants out of Antelope Valley,” Peacock said.

Peacock declined to release the identities of the suspects in custody.

“Two were in the west side of Canyon Country, and the other eight were in Canyon Country – East,” he said, referring to the enforcement zones that are used by the Sheriff’s Station’s Crime Prevention Unit.

In addition to the two arrests, there were two bad addresses, which could be considered a parole violation, and the rest of the parolees were in compliance with their parole conditions, he said.

There are currently 118 parolees from California’s AB 109 law, which was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2011 and started releasing criminals in November 2011, living in the SCV, according to station numbers.

Under the act, which is also known as the Post-Release Community Supervision law, residents of an area are asked to work with law enforcement to help ensure compliance.

The move was part of a deal struck by the governor and Sheriff’s Departments statewide, as part of a move affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court to alleviate overcrowding in the state’s prison system.

Approximately one in three AB 109 offenders arrested by local sheriff’s deputies re-offend and are re-arrested.
