Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies handed out eight citations to local residents for illegal fireworks on July 4, but no fireworks-related injuries were called in, station officials report.

Deputies watched known fireworks “hot spots” which resulted in the issuing of the citations, each carrying a fine between $500-1000, and confiscation of illegal fireworks.

In some cases, deputies seized multiple fireworks but issued no citations because they were unable to identify a violator.

Deputies and Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters also responded to two small brush fires off Commuter Way about 11 p.m. and quickly extinguished them. Authorities suspect the fires were started by illegal fireworks.

The SCV Sheriff’s Station received 116 service calls reporting illegal fireworks during the day and evening, a drop compared to last July 4.

The decrease is attributed to the joint community outreach by the city of Santa Clarita, the SCV Sheriff’s Station, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Seven Crime Prevention deputies were initially deployed from the SCV Sheriff’s Station for firework suppression. An additional 10 deputies were reallocated from the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall after the city’s official fireworks show.

Deputies also handled the usual emergency calls between fireworks calls, making it a busy 24 hours.
