[KHTS] – Santa Clarita residents had the opportunity to learn about the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Saturday morning at an LASD Career Expo at College of the Canyons.
“The Sheriff’s Department is hiring deputy sheriff positions so we brought out several specialized units to display,” said Sgt. O’Brien with the LASD. “The public can ask questions and then draw them into a walk-in examination.”
Units on display at Saturday’s expo included the Special Enforcement Bureau (SWAT), Arson and Explosives, Aero Bureau, Special Victims Bureau, Operation Safe Street, Emergency Operations Bureau, a K-9 unit, Custody Force Training Unit, Parks Bureau, Community Oriented Policing, Star Unit, Fraud and Cyber Crimes, along with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and other various sheriff’s stations.
Along with the various units on display, attendees could take the Deputy Sheriff Trainee written examination, according to a news release.
Academy staff was at the Expo to field any questions potential applicants may have, O’Brien said.
“We want to expose all different areas,” said O’Brien. “There are over 350 different specialized units on our department. There’s something for everybody, whether it’s computer work, data build work, off road vehicles, specialized weapons. We have so many to showcase we can’t put it all in one day but we try to do our best.”
This is the fourth LASD Career Expo, however it is not the last. There will also be an expo on Dec. 5, 2015 at Los Angeles Southwest College.
The expos increase recruitment and also bring public awareness, said O’Brien.
“We want to be able to bring it to their communities and show them that the sheriff’s department is actively hiring,” O’Brien said. “We’re seeking the best and the brightest to come onto our department.”
