The Master’s University golf teams struggled in the 54-hole Sierra Nevada Spring Invitational hosted by OUAZ at the Coyote Springs Golf Club in Moapa, Nev. on Feb. 23 and 24.
Conditions were sunny over the two-day tournament on a tough course that is flat and surrounded by desert.
The women’s team finished sixth among the eight teams competing in their event, while the men finished ninth out of 11 teams. The golfers played 18 holes on Monday and 36 holes on Tuesday.
“(It is) just a tough course with some hard pins,” said TMU Head Coach Luke Brueckner. “You have to miss in the right spots and we just had a hard time. Not much to say, we need to sharpen up before Reflection Bay.”
Hannah Ulibarri was the highest finishing women’s golfer for TMU at T6, 10 strokes off the lead. Susan Tiffner finished T16, Halle Hagberg 28th and Reece Banjamin 38th.
Seth Bishop was the highest finisher among the Mustangs men, taking T17. He was followed by Wes Opliger in T24, Jacob Janho T28, Nathan Blackburn T40 and Charlie Pollock T44.
The highlight of the day came in the third round when Opliger holed out his approach shot from 85 yards for an eagle two on the par-four, 383-yard 10th.
The teams will be back in the desert next week when they compete in the RMC Intercollegiate at the Reflection Bay Golf Club in Lake Las Vegas, Nev. on March 3 and 4.
