UPDATE, Feb. 5:

The Master’s College golf team, the nation’s No. 8 squad, carded a 295 in the final round of the 2013 CSU San Marcos Spring Invite, finishing in third place with an overall team-score of 36-over 900 (302-303-295).

Of the 16 competing schools, Oklahoma City finished in first place (885), followed by tournament host CSU San Marcos (891), concluding in second place.

Out of a field of 85 golfers, Nolan Sand (Hoquiam, WA) tied for fifth place at four-over 220 (73-74-73), while Thane Ringler (Hutchinson, KS) tied for 14th overall at eight-over 224 (76-74-74).  John Lawson (Mobile, AL) tied for 25th by posting a final score of 228 (78-77-73), followed by Andrew Bergoon (Mobile, AL) carding a 231 (78-78-75) and tying for 32nd place.  Michael Reitz (Denver, CO) shot a 234 (75-81-78) and tied for 39th.

The Mustangs now look to play host on March 4 at the annual TMC Spring Invitational, held at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Canyon Country, California.

Feb. 4:

After a three-month break, the No. 8 nationally ranked Mustangs took to the greens Monday for the 2013 CSU San Marcos Spring Invite, held at the Shadowridge Country Club in Vista.

Nolan Sand (Hoquiam, WA) led the Mustangs in the opening round with an impressive one-over par 73.  Michael Reitz (Denver, CO) followed with a three-over par 75, while Thane Ringler (Hutchinson, KS) carded a 76.  Andrew Bergoon (Mobile, AL) and John Lawson (Mobile, AL) each capped off the round with a 78.  The Mustangs carded a first-round team score of 302.

In the second round, Sand shot two-over par 74 and tied for sixth out of a field of 85 athletes.  Ringler tied for 14th and shot one-over par 73.  Lawson (77), Bergoon (78), and Reitz (78) all contributed with consistent play, leading the Mustangs to a second-round team score of 303.

Collectively, the Mustangs ended the day shooting 29-over 605 (302-303), tying in third place with UC San Diego.

Commenting on Monday’s performance, head coach Jason Semelsberger said “we played sloppy today, but we’re looking to clean it up tomorrow.”

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow as the squad looks to their next opportunity to reach the top of the leaderboard in another day of competition.
