The Board of Supervisors will consider approving more than $4.5 million in funding for 184 nonprofit arts groups across the county, including a few local ones.
Every other year, qualifying 501c3 nonprofit arts organizations apply for 2-year grants from the L.A. County Arts Commission. The commission bases its recommendations on the organizations’ budgets as well as their accomplishments, community service, “fiscal and administrative competence” and the “quality of standards-based K-12 arts education services” they provide.
Grantees in the Santa Clarita Valley for the coming fiscal year include (dollar amounts are for two years):
* Repertory East Playhouse: $17,500 to support a part-time theatre manager;
* Santa Clarita Master Chorale Inc.: $20,900 to support compensation of professional instrumentalists, soloists, professional singers and artistic staff;
* Canyon Theatre Guild: $25,200 to support the executive and artistic directors, assistant director/artistic director and the Youth Theatre Institute director.
Continuing funding in fiscal 2015-16 from last year’s allocation are (also 2-year amounts):
* Santa Clarita Artists Association Inc.: $5,800;
* Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival: $7,000;
* E.S.C.A.P.E.: Experience Santa Clarita’s Actor’s Performing Ensemble: $22,800;
* Santa Clarita Ballet Company Inc.: $15,800.
Of those, all are in the “small budget” category (less than $200,000) except for Canyon Theatre Guild, E.S.C.A.P.E. theatre and Santa Clarita Ballet, which are one category up (less than $1 million).
