[KHTS] – A Santa Clarita man who evaded an hours-long search by law enforcement officials in Newhall back in July, and then caught months later by Sheriff’s Station deputies, was sentenced Wednesday.
Hugo Carrillo, 30, of Canyon Country, pleaded no contest to one count of criminal threats, according to officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Carrillo, a reputed active gang member wanted in connection with several charges, was sentenced to 32 months in state prison.
“He was wanted in several crimes, criminal threats and a felon with a gun,” said Detective Mark Barretto, shortly after Carrillo’s arrest in September.
Barretto works with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA unit, which tracked down Carrillo.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives tracked down and arrested Carrillo in Sacramento, according to a Sheriff’s Station’s Nixle report.
Deputies attempted to contact Carrillo after a traffic stop, and Carrillo fled from the scene, back in July.
Deputies, including a helicopter unit, took part in a search of the area, near Peachland and Lyons Avenue, where the stop was being conducted, according to Sgt. Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, at the time of the initial incident.
After several hours, the suspect in the search was identified by deputies as Carrillo, and the search was eventually cancelled.
Through the course of Barretto’s investigation, it was discovered that Carrillo was staying with family in Sacramento, Barretto said.
Within hours of alerting officers with the Sacramento Police Department of Carrillo’s whereabouts, he was arrested by area police officers, and then extradited by deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA Unit.
At the time of the traffic stop, deputies suspected Carrillo might have had a firearm that was tucked into his waistband.
It’s illegal for a felon to be in possession of a firearm.
A gun that detectives linked back to Carrillo was later recovered by Sheriff’s Station officials, which is what led to the weapons charge.
He was being held at Castaic’s Pitchess Detention Center in lieu of $180,000 bail, according to Sheriff’s Department arrest records.
