Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger has been elected to chair the North County Transportation Coalition with unanimous support from the Board of Directors, including mayors and councilmembers from the cities of Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale.

The coalition plays a critical role in the establishment and oversight of transportation priorities, advocates for project funding, and monitors the delivery of major projects in North Los Angeles County.

“Whether you travel by car, train or bus, the North County Transportation Coalition’s main goal is to help you get to your destination safely, quickly and efficiently,” Barger said. “This effort requires strong relationships with our local, state, and federal partners and a firm resolve to achieve successful outcomes for our region.”

Barger said she is looking forward to more than $2 billion in improvements in the region including:

* Additional southbound truck lanes through the Newhall Pass and new HOV/Carpool lanes for the I-5 through Santa Clarita Valley to Castaic;
* On- and off-ramp improvements, additional capacity, elimination of bottlenecks, and pavement rehabilitation along SR-14;
* Safety and capacity improvements and pavement rehabilitation along SR-138;
* Upgrades to the Metrolink Antelope Valley Line that will yield new weekend late-night service, hourly service throughout the day, and new express trains;
* Upgrades and rehabilitation to local major streets and intersections;
* Public/private partnership to bring high-speed rail service from Las Vegas into North L.A. County.
