1997 - Five bodies found during grading of Northlake development in Castaic; determined to be Jenkins graveyard [story]
reburial

A brush fire in the Newhall Pass wreaked havoc on rush-hour traffic Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out shortly before 4 p.m. near the Sierra Highway on-ramp to the 14 Freeway and quickly consumed 3 to 4 acres of brush.

The truck lanes were closed, as was the entire 14 Freeway for a short time as the fire burned under the freeway bridge.

Emergency responders on scene included CHP, L.A. County Sheriff, LAPD, Angeles National Forest, L.A. County Fire and L.A. City Fire, the latter providing aircraft that scooped water from the San Fernando Reservoir. The fire was determined to have started in L.A. City territory.

One structure was threatened but was sufficiently defended by fire fighters.

Knockdown was called at 4:56 p.m. and fire crews stayed to mop up for several hours. The incident was officially concluded at approximately 9:33 p.m.
