Santa Clarita residents can look forward to more park-and-ride spaces along with a wider, four-lane bridge when the Golden Valley bridge over the 14 freeway is widened in the coming months, officials said Wednesday.
Mayor Marsha McLean, City Council members along with Metro and CalTrans representatives all met for the groundbreaking of the long-awaited project.
The two-lane bridge will be widened to add two more lanes, one in each direction, with a protected bicycle and pedestrian lane on each side of the bridge, said Gail Morgan, city of Santa Clarita spokeswoman.
A left-turn lane will be added to access the southbound Highway 14 and two left turn lanes will be added to access the northbound Highway 14.
“Residents here know that I am extremely interested in transportation issues,” said Mayor Marsha Mclean. “People ask me all the time, ‘When are you widening that bridge?’ and I get to say today.”
During the 18-month-long construction time, the bridge and park-and-rides will remain open, Morgan said.
Morgan added that there may be some detouring off of the SR-14 freeway at night during the construction.
“We are essentially building a new bridge next to the old bridge,” said Damon Letz, the assistant city engineer. “It will end up being one bridge.”
The start date of the project is still being worked out, but it will be ASAP, Letz said.
The project is expected to cost about $11 million with some of the funds coming from various sources within the city and a $4 million grant from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Morgan said.
“We are very excited to be a part of this special project,” said Matthew Abbott from Metro.

Especially with the new town home community their building down by Walmart, Golden Valley need to be 3 lanes from the 5 Frwy to the 14 Frwy.

I believe it woulda been more meaningful if ground was broken, instead of playing with a sand pile.
