Student filmmakers, animators and broadcasters from College of the Canyons’ Media Entertainment Arts Department will present their best work at the 16th Annual Student Film Showcase Friday at the college’s Valencia campus.
“It is a tremendous opportunity for students to display professional quality work to family, friends and peers, “ Dave Brill, MEA Department Chair said.
The projects that will run in the showcase were selected by a team of faculty, who judged for strong narrative, cinematography, and editing.
“It entails the work of our film students, our new sound engineering students and animation students,” said Ron Entrekin, MEA department broadcast lab technician.
“One piece is experimental animation, done in ink and paper, and it’s gorgeous. Plus there’s music videos and personal statement videos and more,” he said.
News stories produced by budding journalists for the college’s student produced newscast, Cougar News, televised live from the SCVTV Media Center in Newhall on Wednesday nights during the semester, will also be showcased.
All of the work to be shown was produced by students in the MEA department during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Most entries were produced as projects for classes, said adjunct instructor Jose Franco.
“One of my favorite entries was a 30-second beer commercial that the students produced and entered into a national contest. It’s funny and well produced,” he said.
Friday’s event also serves as the department’s annual awards ceremony.
Awards include recognition for best cinematographer, best screenplay and best animator, among others.
“There’s an award called “Put a Jersey On”, and it’s for students who have accepted leadership roles, tackled new challenges and succeeded,” said Entrekin.
The showcase is free and is open to the public. It will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the Hasley Hall theater (room 101). The show will begin at 7 p.m. The first half of the show is family-friendly, but after intermission, the second half is reserved for adult themes content that may include offensive language, violence or sex, Entrekin said.
Parking for the event is free.
