1828 - Soledad Canyon settler John Lang born in Herkimer County, N.Y. [story]

map[KHTS] – Members of Santa Clarita’s Just Serve Mormon Helping Hands are set to help beautify a section of Whites Canyon Road on Saturday, officials said Friday.

The volunteers will be removing trash, pulling weeds, placing new bark on all parkways and repairing block walls on upper Whites Canyon Road.

“The city has a need for restoration and we have the manpower to help,” said Gary Lindberg, the director of public affairs for the church of Latter Day Saints in Santa Clarita.

Approximately 300 of Just Serve Mormon Helping Hands members and Santa Clarita City staff will be there to help, Lindberg said.

The city of Santa Clarita will be providing the necessary tools for the project and volunteers were asked to bring along some helpful tools, Lindberg said.

The City encourages community members and local organizations to volunteer assistance in several projects throughout the city and at city events in order to serve fellow residents and sustain the Santa Clarita quality of life, said city officials.

Santa Clarita’s Just Serve Mormon Helping Hands volunteers helped the Saugus Union School district last year with clean up and some pest control, Lindberg said. The year before that they helped with Santa Clarita’s bike path.

“We welcome anyone in the community to join us at the LDS church on Camp Plenty at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday,” Lindberg said.

  1. Tim Bonino says:

Great idea but isn’t that going to waste more water?

  2. Natalie Ann says:

Seriously. We need more plants in SCV to water?

  3. Ridiculous….seriously they should be removing all the useless plants not adding more.

  4. Tami Fox says:

No! We don’t need to be watering MORE plants.

  5. Gabe Yanez says:

Waste of money and a waste of water. Plus the city has already chopped down all kinds of trees on Lyons. If anyone hasn’t noticed.

    • That’s so much hog wash! Let’s see, this is in canyon country not Valencia? Lyons matters not whites canyon? This is just some good people doing a good thing. Get out there and help or be quiet! Myself I’ll drive by to see the improvement.

  6. I vote we save the water incase we get thirsty

  7. Sure; let’s plant more plants that we can’t water.

  8. Where is the water going to come from? Our city has planted so many projects like these with the requiste sprinkler pipes etc. How about the concrete cobble stone meridians that require no water!

    • That was my first thought when I saw this: why are they planting in a severe drought? Why are the plants at the Valencia library flooded every week from over watering? why is the mall watering the grass along Magic Mtn Pkwy? Here I am at home recycling my water and letting my lawn go. So frustrating..

    • Suzie Acosta says:

They aren’t adding a water system or plants just doing a clean up. The picture is misleading.

    • Wait a minute! No one told any one in this city to let your lawns go dead! Just stop wasting water which we are all guilty of. Realize green plants and trees give off oxygen and help the air quality. Stop whining and wagging your finger. Just try to not waste!

  9. If you read the article, it doesn’t say anything about adding landscape and watering systems. This pic may not be accurate. Read it…

  10. It’s about time they start investing money into canyon country.

  11. Who thinks of these things while we’re supposedly trying to cut back 25% on water?

  12. If they’re plastic, I’m ok with it.

  13. No planting. Judy cleaning up. “The volunteers will be removing trash, pulling weeds, placing new bark on all parkways and repairing block walls on upper Whites Canyon Road.”

  14. Eddie Hernandez says:

It’s all public information tia, you can find out

  15. Really, Santa Clarita officials need to start thinking about water conservation. It’s amazing how much they waste as it is and they want to add more vegetation!!

  16. What happened to water conservation? When are people going to wake up and realize we are in a drought.

  17. How about the city just drive around this neighborhood and start giving citations one day to all the disgusting people in this neighborhood that have their houses looking like we live in the ghetto instead! That will definitely beautify the whites canyon area!!!! im so sick and tired of driving in this area and seeing it look like a dump!

  18. Danny Dang says:

    WE ARE IN A DROUGHT

  19. People, please read the article! The picture is very misleading!! No water systems are going in! Relax! A general clean up is a good thing! They want to do it!!

  20. No one is reading. Lmao.

  21. Josh Harvey says:

You people need a little more education on where the water waste is and how corporations are basically using the majority of it to make money. Look at the statistics cuz the waste isn’t in your lawn or some trees.

  22. It’s a project to weed, clean up, and put down mulch.

  23. Nic Miller says:

    Effin READ THE ARTICLE PEOPLE!!!!

  24. Why is everyone so critical of this? Why not use drought tolerant plants instead???

  25. Do some of you folks not read the article before you spout off? Didn’t see anything about planting anything! CLEAN UP!!!!

    • The picture is quite misleading I’d have to say! Hence why so many people are irritated. Relax

    • But one would think if you’re going to respond to something posted you should read the article before doing so. A picture is not the story. That was my point. My comment was no more riled up then those that were having a meltdown about water waste etc.

  26. Waste of money. Another traffic issue to add to our town.

  27. Yes beautify Canyon country!

  28. John Gilbert says:

A realator told me recently that the city won’t put money into beautifiaction of lower Whites Cyn because of all the prop 13 owners in North Oaks/Four Oaks. Looking at all the current reworking pf landscaping and expansion of beautification on Soledad west of Camp Plenty, I think he called it !

  29. I’d purpose a project to remove the unsightly power lines that span up and down Whites Canyon. That will make the area more beautiful!

  30. Your realtor is wrong, John. The whites area voted against a special assessment that pay for landscape maintenance such as this in other parts of the city. The Whites plan was a lower cost, subsidized to reflect the economics of the property owners in that area, but it did not pass, therefor they did not get landscaped medians (at that time).

  32. Nice but does it come with the book of Mormon? If so, pass.

  36. “The volunteers will be removing trash, pulling weeds, placing new bark on all parkways and repairing block walls on upper Whites Canyon Road.”

    not planting new plants……..

  37. The sad part is that this lovely LDS group is going to come together and volunteer hours to help clean up and I guarantee you some of the dirt bags in the area will just mess it up within a couple of weeks.

  38. Brian maloney says:

God, some of you people are so nasty and negative. My family has lived in SCV for my entire life, and I. Appalled at how rude some of you can be. And it gets worse with time. Quit your BI*ching, and do something productive, like help out with the project! This is why I chose to move… Good lord, people.

  39. Gail Morgan says:

Thank you all for your comments. The article is correct; volunteers will be doing a clean up of the Whites Canyon area. The photos accompanying the story are however incorrect. The photos show a formerly proposed landscaping project which is NOT part of the clean up effort by the volunteers. We’ve asked the news entities to remove the misleading photos. –Gail Morgan, Communications Manager, City of Santa Clarita

  40. Gary Lindberg says:

Santa Clarita water worriers. I agree with you conservation concerns. However, this project involves no water at all. The City also is aware of your taxpayer dollars and has arranged for volunteers to complete the project. Those of you that wish to help improve the community are welcome to come and help with the clean up and restoration of the parkways along Whites Canyon. Please read to article for more information. Then come and join us at the church building on the corner of Drycliff and Camp Plenty Rd. at 7:30 Saturday May 30th.
Thanks for your interests in our City.

  41. Chelsea Munn says:

Sure, let’s cut our showers down to two minutes, so that we can waist the water on the street instead… Great thinking. _-_

  42. Herb Schmidl says:

Why waste money on this project? This is Canyon Country… Not Awesome Town. It would be better to re-align the rt. turn lane at Soledad & Sand Canyon to go straight to get to the 14 South entrance instead.

  44. wth! we are in a drought and they want to put more greens to water plants that we don’t have water for? leave as it. we are in a drought people!

  45. Lynn Vogel says:

Did not read article, just looked at the beautiful green center median that’s shown in the ‘after’ picture. Wow, clean up alone will do that?!!

  46. Lea Rojas says:

It is the time to reconsidered beautification projects.. Whites Canyon and others areas of CC need work to be done . instead of certains areas only. be fair

  47. r u going to help??

  48. Verena Owen says:

“The volunteers will be removing trash, pulling weeds, placing new bark on all parkways and repairing block walls on upper Whites Canyon Road.”
not planting new plants………..Stop Bit***g and appreciate the work they will be doing….get out there and help?!

  50. so cal guy says:

All I can say is “wow”…all these negative comments about a volunteer project by a group that has offered to spend their weekend helping residents improve and clean up a street. I would bet that a lot of the volunteers don’t even live off of Whites Canyon. Reading a lot of these comments should really make them feel appreciated. I guess there is truth in the phrase “No good deed goes unpunished”. Wake up people!!! its volunteer project to clean up the neighborhood.
