[KHTS] – Deputies were called out to Elephant Bar in Valencia Tuesday, responding to management’s concerns. Deputies determined that no crime was being committed and left within 20 minutes.

The Elephant Bar Restaurant on McBean Parkway closed for good Tuesday, according to former workers of the Valencia restaurant.

It was one closure among several in Southern California, including the locations in Burbank, Northridge and the Simi Valley.

elephant-bar-restaurant-valencia-close-thursday-after-13-years-4There was “not enough traffic to sustain the business,” said a spokeswoman for the company, referring to the closures.

The management at the Valencia location called local deputies Tuesday evening, worried that the employees were becoming unruly and might damage or steal something.

Deputies responded as a precaution at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday but determined that no crime was being committed and left the scene by 6:10 p.m.

They just stood outside the restaurant as a presence, said Deputy Josh Dubin.

The Valencia Elephant Bar employed 66 people, who were only given four days notice of the closure, according to Nichole Goltz.

Goltz identified herself as a Valencia Elephant Bar waitress in a comment thread under the original story about the closure on the KHTS AM-1220 Facebook page.

“I have never seen so many tears and distress,” she said in her comment. “I held back tears (June 8) during my shift. I know a lot of my coworkers who are single parents as myself and now don’t know what to do next.”

Goltz also expressed frustration that she and her coworkers had been given less than a week’s notice.

“We have to give two weeks’ notice to quit a job, but we had a four-day notice to lose our jobs,” she wrote in the comment.

The employees are expected to gather again at the Elephant Bar from 2-4 p.m. on Friday to receive their final paychecks.

Since Monday, the Valencia location on the Elephant Bar website has been removed.

Calls to the location’s number, 661-799-8640 were met with a busy signal.

The nearest Elephant Bar restaurants are in Torrance and Downey.

  11. Wow, my heart goes out to the employees who only had a four day notice. They didn’t even see it coming.

  12. Jim Lupold says:

The landlord and city should be courting Yardhouse, Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs or another higher quality restaurant.

  13. Jesse Zavala says:

Manager did not walk out he was in the front answering questions and gave us information on how to redeem our gift card… Also talked to the staff who my heart goes to becuz they lost their jobs… The whole situation is Sad just wish they would have gave better notice

  14. T.J. Jones says:

Good the food & the service sucked!

  15. That’s very sad.. also.. i read it here on FB a week ago.. so if they didn’t give employees more notice ..shame on them.. since it was public knowledge. :( hopefully some other restaurants in town can pick up some of the employees

  16. Seriously….
How could the employees have just found out THAT day!?

I knew last week and I don’t even live in town any more.

    a yardhouse would be sick

  21. Rick Bottom says:

Is the one in Torrance closing too ?

  22. I read that they closed Tues instead of Thursday because more than half the staff just didn’t show up once they found out about the closing.

  23. Appears I’m in the minority. I loved it there. Sad for me and the employees.

  25. Lisa Correa says:

Enough with the mega chains already. SCV is one GIGANTIC chain of chains.

  26. Horrible Company, just an example of exactly what the Scv doesn’t need. It’s public knowledge they are closing 1/3 of the chain not to inform your employees is unacceptable. It’s time to have a community/employee first mind set bring on the mom and pops. I’m done with big chain, except Wal-Mart ( ignorance is bliss) besides what better photo ops? Point is …I hope the landlord gives who ever comes in a break….

  27. I don’t blame them for walking out!!!!!! Nothing like 4 days notice that you are going to loose your job!!!! Whatever company owns them should be ashamed!!!! And that restaurant in Santa Clarita was always busy.

  28. And yes the place was always packed good employees ok menu …..just the company are the blank blanks.

  29. YH would be perfect. They are looking into it.

  30. No more corporate chains! Those are NOT high quality restaurants!

  31. Great place I think! Always seemed busy to me! I’d be posses if I was an employee too! They coulda given everyone a better notice!

  32. Tear it down and build a ” The Hat ” with drive thru. Every city needs scrape off the plate pastrami!!!

  33. ashley woods says:

What’s sad is how they treated there employees like dogs. my best friend is nichole and it’s really crappy of them to treat anyone like that. The company should be ashamed of themselfs.

  34. I will never ever set foot in another elephant bar ever. The food was ok nothing special

  35. kristin murray says:

So sad for the employees of this restaurant. I work for yard house and think they should put one in place of that and offer those employees a place to work. It is a great establishment. I have worked for them for three years now. I agree with Goltz. It sucks that they only have for days when we have to give two weeks notice. Unbelievable

  36. Sandra Caipo says:

I went there on Monday the waitress was so awesome and was crying. They had someone come help them out from Simi Valley. They only gave them 4 days notice and didn’t even help them look for new jobs!! That my friends is called corporate greed. If what happens makes you upset. Then it’s time you stop investing in them and more in Mom and Pop. Perhaps that would be better for everyone!

    • Kevin Smith says:

To be fair, it’s not really corporate greed to not help someone else find a job when you’ve closed your restaurant because is losing and has cost you too much money. If this was one of those mom and pop’s everyone is talking about and it failed they would be in the same boat. I am sure that they hung on as long as possible. There isn’t some board room of magically happy people just thrilled about closing a losing investment. If you tell the employees ahead of time they stop coming to work, throw a fit and create havoc which isn’t going to save your business. This is the only way it could go and everyone lost.

    • Sandra Caipo says:

Mr. Smith this to be fair this was not a mom and pop. It is corporate greed. 4 days notice is not sufficient and btw your right it isn’t their job to help them find new ones however last time I read they told the newspaper they were helping them. Remind me how it’s not their job when they said they were doing it in the first place. That’s fair!

  37. Ckay Walker says:

I think unless you understand what Newhall land charges business you don’t know the real problem.

  38. I remember many moons ago, a then-employer gave us employees a 6 hour notice. Fun times.

  39. Sarcasm….ckay stay with us

  40. This valley is full of chain restaurants because no one eats at and supports mom and pop places out here it’s sad but everyone knows it’s true that’s why mom and pops close and a chain or franchise comes in and takes over

  41. Drew Denmeade did you see the lasted on this? Crazy. Same on them!

  42. Leslie says:

Four days notice is pretty good in the restaurant business. I have friends that have shown up for work and the doors of the restaurant are locked with a note on the door telling them the restaurant is closed.

To be honest, the last time we were at EB the service was terrible and the servers were unfriendly. Also, my favorite dish was no longer on the menu.

  43. James Albin says:

How about no notice. They took about 10 of us to lunch. Told us if we were at this table. Congratulations. You have a week left. 30 other people left at the company we’re let go at lunch time and didn’t know it until lunch time. No goodbyes nothing! They were gone when we got back.

  44. Chris Patterson Haymond The restaurant found out Sunday. I, AS A SERVER who didn’t work that day, found out after calling the manager Sunday evening after getting multiple texts asking if it was true…. And then they don’t even end up closing on Thursday, but TUESDAY. So really ‘was only a lousy 2 day notice. #RUDE

  45. At least they had few days notice when Hometown Buffet closed they just locked the doors and put a note on the door. They had absolutely no notice at all. Either way it’s just bad practice.

  46. so sad but i never liked the food

  47. Tony Follett says:

All of them are closing in other cities. I stopped going there years ago . Poor service and couldn’t get the order right

  48. There goes our happy hour spot people on CREEKSIDE auto center! Smh

  49. Sabrina says:

At least they got a four day notice… I worked for a company in the coffee industry that closed its doors with NO notice to us AND we didn’t get our final pay checks!! The worst part is I was the assistant general manager and had NO knowledge of the shut down… I too was a single mother so I feel their pain and frustration…. I’d say file for unemployment ASAP and HUNT HUNT HUNT!!! Good luck to all.. (The Bakersfield location is staying open for those with gift cards) xoxo

  50. Food Sucked anyways !!!

  51. They don’t have to give notice and this is exactly why some places don’t. Without chain restaurants you would have many jobless Santa Claritans. It is very difficult to be a small business owner in CA.

  52. Newhall land and farm have deep pockets- only chains can afford to pay the percentage on the earnings.. I would love a Cheesecake Factory- or a Ruth Chris

  53. Maybe a new resturant that would change things up and rehire the staff that was let go! The staff didn’t deserve that

  54. Thank god I got a roach in my salad there!!!!! Cockroach!!!

  55. Cheesecake Factory would be nice!

  56. Lisa Lisa says:

OMG…I love The Hat!!! Bomb ass pastramis and O’Rings!!

  57. Davin Link says:

Hmm a strip club would be perfect in that location.

  58. Not a big enough location for a Cheesecake Factory

  59. I was there Monday evening and employees were walking off the job and I was told the manager was the first one to leave…anyway this story says the police were called but it doesn’t say why? does anyone know?

  60. It said (perhaps deleted now) that the manager felt the employees were becoming rowdy and the manager feared they would take things… With 4days notice any only able to work 2 of them… I think they should have been able to take a parting gift-

  61. Kathy Toomey says:

PF Chang’s would be nice! I like the Yard House and Cheesecake Factory suggestions too!

  62. Sandra Caipo Ruth Chris is an OVERPRICED steak house where sides are NOT included in the price.

  63. 4 locations closed down today!

  64. Heidi Nguyen says:

Alyssa Balkcom at least it beat no fear by a couple days

  65. Lol I know! People are upset about getting a 4 day notice, we got like a 12 hour notice! Really sucks people are loosing their jobs left and right! Heidi Nguyen

  66. Heidi Nguyen says:

I know, and jobs are getting pickier and pickier, it’s about connections these days

  67. If any of these past employees need work ASAP please contact kspayless@yahoo.com if your interested in “Retail Appt. Generator” position at our local Costco

  68. Israel Sosa says:

This place was honestly terrible. Service was lousy, food was what ever.. no memories made there. I do feel for a few workers because I knew them personally. But that blonde server Stephanie! She shouldn’t be a server anywhere else.

  69. Mark Malig says:

Fun playing Trivia with all the E-Bar peeps at tilted kilt…Los Doyer Love!

  70. Life is better when you work for yourself. You don’t have to deal with this bs. Take a risk and start a business.

  71. Yeah great time to start a business

  72. Jerry Cohen says:

  75. Shane Greedy says:

E Bar………….for giving employees several days notice……………you are never ever welcome in SCV again!

    • Nick Darcy says:

Unfortunately it sucks but anytime a business closes it’s better for the customer that employees don’t know. Disgruntled employees and food are a bad mix and theft. They way around this that they F’ed up is everyone should have got a severance check of 2 weeks pay in lieu of two week notice

  77. Lived 19 years in scv and only went one time, that place sucked

  78. Jesse Miller says:

The cops came? Management called the cops??? Hahaha only in SCV.

  79. …….after hearing that they only gave employees 4 days notice…. I won’t EVER be going to an Elephant Bar Restaurant again!!!!!!!!!!!

  80. Shawn Butsky says:

Time to come back to the murder mitten

  81. Who owned that restaurant? They might have other ones!!

  82. Dan Ciotti says:

Yes it sucks but in that industry you can’t give much notice. Do you want an Employee upset he or she is losing job making your food? Bad things happen, they should have just closed the door and paid the employees 2 weeks severance

  83. Dan Ciotti says:

This was my favorite place. Sure hated to see it go

  86. Why? Angie Enriquez Yard is Stupid!!

  87. Valencia, Burbank, Irvine, Simi, & the brand new Northridge location are all closing!

  88. You selfish people! All you can think of is what new restaurant to replace E-Bar? I feel for the employees that only had a 4 day notice. It can take months before finding a new job.

  89. Nicole Adams says:

While I feel terrible for the employees that were there at the end when the ship finally sank, there were multiple signs since last summer that the company was in real trouble. And they didn’t just start treating their employees badly this week. FOH employees did not have adequate staffing and were run ragged and trainers at my store were never given promised pay raises. I would often show up for busy shifts and they would dump a trainee on me without notice or even a free meal. Without the coupons and senior cards, the company would have completely shut down already. And don’t get me started on the duping of the public with the big gift card campaigns, which even made their way into the Costcos. The rats were running off the ship in the SFV stores for months. I’m glad I got out before the final drama. God bless those who were not as fortunate. Because of the EDD violation in the failure to give 60 days notice, hopefully the state will step in and stop this company from doing business in California once and for all.

  90. These days a plan b is a must, one stream of income won’t do it anymore. I feel for the employees which way I’m so passionate about helping families with extra income on top of what their doing. If anyone is looking for additional income, more time with family contact me asap at 702-684-4970 or email me at Rashadfr@Yahoo.com

  94. Matthew King says:

To the waitress who said you have to give two weeks notice to leave a job, this is not true. This has just been a custom and nowhere does it say you give two weeks. In fact it is normal now not to. An employer cannot give you a negative review just because you left unexpectedly.

  95. Nichole goltz says:

I see my ex kevin gunnison has commented on this article. Known fact is he is upset that I will not go back to him. Enough said.
