Former COC Cougar and current New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right finger amputated after a firework accident over the July 4 holiday weekend, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
NFL.com reported Thursday that Pierre-Paul also suffered a broken thumb as a result of the accident, requiring pins to repair the damage. Pierre-Paul could be out for as long as six weeks due to the injury, according to the report.
USA Today reported that a group of team officials traveled to Florida to see Pierre-Paul but were unable to meet with him at the hospital.
A Giants source told the New York Daily News that the team had no knowledge of the amputation until Schefter reported it via Twitter.
Neither Pierre-Paul, his agent, or the Giants have commented on the situation.
Pierre-Paul was a member of the 2007 COC Cougars Football team, posting 49 tackles, 14 sacks, 19 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery as a freshman before leaving for Fort Scott Community College and eventually South Florida University in 2008 and 2009.
Since being drafted with the 15th overall pick by the Giants in 2010, Pierre-Paul has played in 75 games for the team, amassing 286 tackles, 42 sacks, two interceptions and two touchdowns. He has been a Pro-Bowl selection twice in five seasons.
Pierre-Paul has yet to sign his $14.8 million franchise tag and the team has reportedly pulled a $60 million long-term contract offer from earlier this week.
