A fund has been established to assist the family of the Good Samaritan who was killed during an attempted robbery Monday in Canyon Country.
The identity of the victim has not been verified by the coroner, who has been in contact with the Mexican consulate to help locate the victim’s next of kin.
Homicide Lt. Eddie Hernandez, who is leading the investigation, said that the strict guidelines that determine who is considered “next of kin” do not allow the coroner to release the information.
“We believe, since he’s not married, that we cannot consider the mother of his 6-year old son next of kin,” Hernandez explained. No identification was found on the victim’s person and his fingerprints are not in any legal system, indicating that he may not be a documented visitor.
“We don’t concern ourselves with legal status,” he continued. “For suspects, we do make notification to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), but for victims, we don’t get into that. It’s a strange situation. This man is a victim and he tried to do the right thing.”
Donations are being accepted for the Memorial Fund at Bank of Santa Clarita, 23780 Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia.
