STOCKTON, Calif. – The Lancaster JetHawks led 6-3 in the 10th but couldn’t finish off the Stockton Ports and eventually fell 7-6 on a walk-off walk in the 11th inning on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Stockton (28-26) loaded the bases against reliever Carlos Polanco with a single and two walks. Polanco (3-4) then walked James Harris with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run.
The JetHawks (29-25) had rallied to take a 6-3 lead in the 10th inning. Yonathan Daza broke the 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in, and Roberto Ramos followed with a sac-fly of his own two batters later. Mylz Jones capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single.
Alexander Guillen, who had pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to push the game to extras, ventured back to the mound for the bottom of the 10th. He allowed three straight singles to begin the inning. A run came home on Seth Brown’s base hit to bring Stockton within two. Guillen then induced a 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Sean Murphy to bring the JetHawks within one out of the win, but served up a two-run homer to Mikey White on the first pitch of the following at-bat. The homer was White’s second of the game and tied it, 6-6.
The JetHawks had trailed, 2-0, for the majority of the early innings. Skye Bolt led off the bottom of the first with a home run and White hit a solo shot in the second against JetHawks starter Jesus Tinoco.
Tinoco settled in and recorded a quality start, finishing his night with four scoreless innings. He allowed two runs on five hits over six frames with a season-high six strikeouts.
Ports starter Dustin Hurlbutt had thrown six scoreless frames before the JetHawks rallied to take the lead in the seventh. Daza and Brian Mundell began the inning with singles, and Ramos singled up the middle to score Daza. Mundell scored to tie the game on a passed ball, and the JetHawks took the lead on a Wilson Soriano RBI-fielder’s choice ground out.
Reliever Helmis Rodriguez gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Brendan Rodgers committed an error to start the inning, Rodriguez walked a batter and a bunt base hit loaded the bases. The run scored on a Bolt sacrifice fly.
Rodgers went 3-for-6 in the game to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. He recorded his eighth straight multi-hit game.
Here’s the box score.
The third game of the four-game series is set for Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Craig Schlitter will start for the JetHawks against Boomer Biegalski. First pitch is 7:10 p.m.
