[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley residents are invited to attend a meeting on November 12 to discuss the Whittaker Bermite property cleanup, officials announced Saturday.

Residents Invited To Discuss Whittaker Bermite Property CleanupThe property, an undeveloped 996-acre site located in the center of Santa Clarita, is a former munitions testing and manufacturing site with “contamination issues” that is currently being “cleaned up” under the supervision of the California Department of Toxic Substances, according to the Whittaker Bermite website.

The Whittaker Bermite Citizens’ Advisory Group is hosting the meeting to discuss an alleged chemical runoff that is reportedly affecting the water supply, air and soil, according to a CAG news release.

“The project is a major challenge,” said a statement on the news release. “Chemicals originating from the property have migrated off the property and are being detected in the local water supply, as well as in the air and soil.”

The upcoming meeting will feature a presentation and discussion of the proposed cleanup of the water supply.

CAG holds three meetings per year to hear reports from the state agencies involved in the cleanup of the property, and meetings are open to all members of the community.

Representatives from the Department of Toxic Substance Control and the California Department of Public Health frequently participate in the meetings, according to CAG officials.

The meeting is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on November 12 at the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, located at 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road.

ME AND MY MOM AND ANNA HILL WORKED HERE..

  2. Scott Lynch says:

Zeolite… Search it… Talked to one company cleaning the land a few years ago, since Zeolite worked, they wanted nothing to do with it as it would take away work… So, work or clean it up.. Zeolite Look it up!!!

  3. Stacy Grover says:

So, we get to go to the site, find unexploded ordnance, put it in a baggie and bring it back. Or blow ourselves up?

    • Kim Sloan says:

I don’t want more building, especially on this site with possible dangers to the public or potential homeowners. There is equipment and technology now to do surface depth surveillance without physically looking on the ground. Maybe they can try to clear the land mines out? Three-dimensional imaging[edit]
Individual lines of GPR data represent a sectional (profile) view of the subsurface. Multiple lines of data systematically collected over an area may be used to construct three-dimensional or tomographic images. Data may be presented as three-dimensional blocks, or as horizontal or vertical slices. Horizontal slices (known as “depth slices” or “time slices”) are essentially planview maps isolating specific depths. Time-slicing has become standard practice in archaeological applications, because horizontal patterning is often the most important indicator of cultural activities. [5]

  4. I thought this cleanup was contracted by a Cherokee Corp. Another fact lost like the Master Plan?

    • Cathy says:

So many questions after reading this..
      1. what are the chemicals exactly?
      2. what is their shelf life, when do they become inert?
      3. what about the wildlife that lives there any plans for them?
      4. any thoughts on making that a recreational area like Griffith Park?
      5. why are you just investigating Bermite US flare was just up river from Bermite. They had to have released chemicals too? I’ve heard of no investigating of their former property.
I guess I will have to attend the meeting to find out the answers.

  5. Sherrie Brussa says:

Wow…I worked at Bermite in the early 70s — I use to wear cotton undergarments so I would not get blow up. I use to ride every morning with Don Prince in his red and white Volkswagen bus and than when you arrived to went to your assigned bus ? (yes it was a crickty yellow bus my building was way up the mountain) it was a crazy ride –

When you reached your building you went in and clipped yourself in so as not to spark and blow up that day OMG! I am pretty sure I was making some of the missiles for Vietnam. Man anytime You heard a click you untied yourself and ran like hell so you would not blow up. I have quite a few friends that are fried on the walls in those buildings RIP – when the whistle went off you got in your yellow bus and head down this mountain and man was it a winding road and you could hear the brakes squeal – well I already owned my home and quit when I was 2 months pregnant with my first daughter Sheree Smith. I would love to hear from others that worked with me. I always say I did my part for the war by building their ammunition etc etc. Thank you God for allowing me to survive when others perished (I mean there body was implanted on the wall. God bless them . Signed Sherrie Brussa
