The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has named First District Supervisor Hilda Solis as the new board chair for 2026.
Solis took the gavel from Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to lead the county board that represents 10 million county residents and oversees 117,000 county employees.
The board typically holds its board reorganization meeting in December and rotates the chair position annually among the five board members.
Solis, 67, is in her last year serving on the board and represents a district that includes East Los Angeles and parts of the San Gabriel Valley.
This is her third term as board chair.
She is also serving her third term on the board and will be ineligible to run again.
L.A. County board members are limited to three four year terms.
The other members of the L.A. Board of Supervisors, in addition to Barger who represents the Santa Clarita Valley, are:
District 2 Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, serving her second term on the board. She will be up for election in 2028.
District 3 Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, serving her first term on the board. She will be up for election in November 2026.
District 4 Supervisor Janice Hahn, serving her final term on the board.
Barger was first elected to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in 2016 and is also currently in her last term on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
The board saluted Barger, as she turned the gavel over to Solis, for her leadership, especially setting up resources for victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires.
Horvath said it was Barger who co-authored her motion to start a new county Department of Homeless Services and Housing.
Second District Supervisor Holly Mitchell was voted unanimously as the vice chair of the board. She is expected to advnce to the position of chair in 2027.
