“West Side Story,” an adaption of the Romeo and Juliet story, opened Saturday at the Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall.
In this Tony Award-winning musical, the love story of Romeo and Juliet becomes that of Maria and Tony.
The grudge between the houses of the Capulets and the Montagues becomes a feud between the Jets and the Sharks.
“Whether you are team Jets or team Sharks, everyone loves a love story,” said CTG officials.
At the same time, much of the ugliness, agony and neuroticism of slum life in New York is captured, as well.

“She has truly been an outstanding advocate for the arts in our community. She will be missed!” said CTG officials.
