This week’s Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week is Matthew Edwards of Canyon boys basketball. Matthew has a 4.3 GPA and scored 2010 on the SAT. Whether it’s sports or academics, his standard is to simply try his best.
“I try to do the best I can at everything I do,” Matthew said. “So for grades and basketball, no matter what I do I just try to do the best I can.”
His college options include Harvey Mudd, Cal Lutheran, Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, and one very personal choice.
“Cal Tech,” he said when asked where he would most like to go. “My brother is there so I know how good of a school it is and they are known for being really good at science and math and everything related to that.”
The specific science he wants to study is computer science, and while he says he is mostly interested in software, he knows his way around the hardware.
“I’ve just always had computers because my uncle gave me a computer when I was really little,” said the 6-foot-5 forward. “So I’ve always been around them. I’ve been messing with them and tinkering with them and fixing them. So I’ve just grown up with that and that’s what I love to do.”
While he wants to follow his brother to Cal Tech and perhaps play basketball there as well, Matthew points to others in his family for giving him motivation to succeed.
“Definitely my grandpa and my mom,” he said. “They both went to college and my grandpa worked on space shuttles and stuff like that. That was really cool. I always liked seeing what he worked on when I was a kid, so he’s probably inspired me the most.”
Congratulations to Matthew Edwards of Canyon High School, the Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.
