SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – College of the Canyons women’s basketball sophomore guard Keiona Mathews was voted a Third-Team All-State selection.
Mathews, the Western State Conference, North Division, Player of the Year, led College of the Canyons to a second-place finish in the conference and the program’s 21st consecutive playoff bid.
“Keke Mathews deserves to be recognized as one of California’s top players this season,” COC head women’s basketball coach Greg Herrick said. “Second in the state in scoring and ranked high in many other statistical categories, she put the Cougars on her back. I cannot say enough about her poise and determination. She worked hard in practice, was almost unstoppable in conference games and had one of the finest seasons in school history.”
The sophomore finished tied for second in the state in scoring (24.8), third in points (694), 18th in free throw percentage (77.3) and 26th in rebounding (10.2). She also broke five school records – most points scored in a game (47), free throw attempts in a game (21), free throw attempts in a season (225), free throws made in a game (18) and free throws made in a season (197). Mathews also tied the school record for most field goals made in a game with 17.
Mathews becomes the 25th Cougar to earn all-state honors.
