crimeA 71-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by an 18-year-old man at a Valencia park Monday afternoon.

The elderly man reportedly approached two young people in Valencia Glen Park at approximately 2:15 p.m. and told them to stop smoking, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station spokeswoman Shirley Miller.

The 18-year-old then allegedly punched him.

The elderly man was able to get a photo on his cell phone of the young people before he was assaulted, Miller said.

Deputies were able to use the photo to track down the two of the young men involved. One was a juvenile and the other was reportedly 18-year-old Tanner Smith.

The complaint charges Smith with punching the victim in the face knocking him to the ground.

Smith has been charged with battery and elder abuse, according to Miller.

Bail was set at $20,000 and a protective order was issued to keep Smith away from the park and the victim.

The 71-year-old was not seriously injured and declined medical help.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of one year in county jail and $1,000 fine.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Clarita Station.

  7. This is what happens when you are born and raised in Valencia with rich mommies and daddies wiping your asses all the time for you!! And FYI I was born and raised out there but was taught respect. And didn’t have my parents throw money at me to shut me up! This is just disgusting!

  8. This just shows lack of parenting. I was raised to have respect for others, especially elderly people.

  9. John Gilbert John Gilbert says:

Their “Parents” must be proud of them, to show the Community the values that their spawn has been taught at home.

I’m glad I wasn’t there cuz if I would’ve seen that kid lunch the old man I would’ve beat the life out of that ass

  16. This is what today’s society is creating…a generation growing up with no morals… it’s all about me and I can do whatever I want and get praised for it generation…no respect for authority or for anyone who they can take advantage and it is never their fault and are entitled to everything. They are taught at home and in school that they are special and everyone wins … they see the people they look up to in the media doing and saying nasty things and are glorified by their behavior. If society doesn’t stop the root cause to this horrific behavior this kind of stuff will just continue and get worse. But since society is the root cause sadly I don’t see this getting better anytime soon…

  17. Look at Tanner Smith on FB wonder if it is him??

  18. Mike Weaver Mike Weaver says:

  26. Unbelievable!
The lack of respect is mind boggling . I think a stint in the military would cure that .

  27. Chet Mehra Chet Mehra says:

What a jerk . They should cane his backside and slap him on his head .

  28. Dan says:

It’s about time we held parents responsible for their children, at least to some degree. Especially for the minor.

  29. Look at his Facebook what a loser…. He Talks about smoking and being a loser driver haha hope he has fun in jail ????

  30. PHIL says:

You are right Vic all these young trouble makers need to go back from where they come from and quit messing up SANTA CLARITA

  31. His punishment should be to help this elderly man for a year (if the man is ok with it) 8-10 hrs/day x5/wk. Whatever he needs, fix his home or clean it, do his laundry, pay his bills, pet care, buy his groceries… With a supervisor. He needs to learn respect, compassion and empathy. There is so much to learn from our elders. What a shame.

  32. Maybe a better “punishment” would be to require him to work in a nursing home for a year

  33. Mary Andres Mary Andres says:

    Punks No respect ?
