The Santa Clarita Valley was filled with smoky skies and the smell of fire Friday morning but no local fires have been reported.

“We have no reports of any active fires in the Santa Clarita area as of now,” said Inspector Randall Wright with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has received numerous phone calls from residents who have expressed concerns about the smell and haze, according to Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. The smoke is drifting from the Sherpa Fire in Santa Barbara County.

Los Padres National Forest officials say the smoke may be from the 4,000-acre Sherpa Fire, west of Goleta, just north of the city of Santa Barbara.

“We just heard that people yesterday were smelling smoke in Ventura,” said Los Padres National Forest spokesman Manuel Madrigal. “It might be a possibility (that smoke has reached Los Angeles County).”

As of Friday morning, the fire had burned 4,000 acres and was 5 percent contained, according to forest officials. The fire began Wednesday.

About 270 structures are threatened and one structure has been destroyed. No injuries have been reported.

More than 1,230 personnel have been assigned to the fire.

The fire along Highway 101 is constantly being evaluated, according to fire officials. Highway 101 may be closed again if the fire becomes a hazard to motorists.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

I’m in Canyon Country, up in a pretty high location and the sky is just full of smoke, starting to get into the house. From the house we can see a view across a huge section of the valley Soledad Canyone and White’s Canyon going up the hill and the whole area is shrouded in smoke, can’t even see the hills. Visibility estimate is less than a mile. And my lungs are starting to burn. It’s very bad.
