lawnmowerSouthland residents can now register to save up to 70 percent on a new cordless-electric lawn mower through the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s popular annual Lawn Mower Exchange Program.

“Through this great offer, residents will be able to save a significant amount on a new, highly efficient electric lawn mower, while helping us clean the air,” said SCAQMD Chairman William A. Burke, Ed.D.

Now in its 14th year, the program helps offset the cost of upgrading to a high performance battery-electric lawn mower while helping improve air quality in the region. Residents can purchase a battery-electric lawn mower for a heavily discounted price by trading in their used, highly polluting gas-powered lawn mowers.

This year’s program offers 3,000 mowers for purchase with trade-in. SCAQMD encourages residents to act fast and register to secure a spot at one of five events being held in Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Ontario, Riverside and Van Nuys.

Residents have the opportunity to register and choose from one of seven Black+Decker, Ego and Greenstation battery-electric models ranging from $100 to $250:

− Black+Decker 16” cutting width, 40-volt battery, $130 (Retail price: $375)

− Black+Decker 19” cutting width, 36-volt battery, $165 (Retail price: $400)

− Black+Decker 20” cutting width, 40-volt battery, $205 (Retail price: $450)− Ego 20” cutting width, 56-volt battery, $180 (Retail price: $549)

− Greenstation 18” cutting width, 36-volt battery, $100 (Retail price: $329) – up to 70 percent savings

− Greenstation 19” cutting width, 40-volt battery, $180 (Retail price: $379)

− Greenstation 21” cutting width, 80-volt battery, $250 (Retail price: $599)

To take advantage of this great offer, residents must pre-register at www.aqmd.gov/lawnmower or call 1-888-425-6247. Registration opens today at 8 a.m. and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Exchanging a mower is easy and convenient – only a 10- to 15-minute process – and participants do not have to leave their car. Upon arrival, workers will remove the old gas mower from the vehicle and drain it of hazardous fluids prior to its destruction at a metal recycling facility. After payment is made, attendants will place the new, boxed mower in the customer’s vehicle. To view a video on the exchange process, visit www.aqmd.gov/lawnmower.

Residents must be at least 18 years old to participate in the program and must reside within the South Coast Air Basin. Gas-powered mowers must be in working order and only one mower per household can be exchanged. Cash, check or major credit cards are accepted for payment.

Exchange events will take place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon as follows:

* Sept. 17 at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, Long Beach

* Sept. 24 at the Airport Parking Lot, Van Nuys

* Oct. 1 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario

* Oct. 8 at Bourns Inc. Riverside

* Oct. 15 at the OC Fair & Event Center Parking Lot, Costa Mesa

When the program ends this year, SCAQMD will have scrapped approximately 58,000 highly polluting gasoline mowers. The 3,000 mowers that will be replaced this year will remove almost two tons of emissions per year from our air.

This year’s program is sponsored by the SCAQMD with special thanks to Veteran’s Stadium at Long Beach City College, Van Nuys Airport, Citizens Business Bank Arena, Bourns, Inc. and OC Fair & Event Center, Costa Mesa.

The program is funded through SCAQMD’s Air Quality Investment Program, which is financed by Southland companies that pay a fee in lieu of offering rideshare incentives as required by SCAQMD’s Rule 2202. The lawn mower exchange program will reduce more emissions than would be achieved by an employer rideshare program.

SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
