A red flag warning has been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas due to wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour until Thursday morning. In addition to the high winds, a combination of conditions are creating a high fire danger.
The National Weather Service released this warning today: “A tightening northernly surface pressure gradient will bring increasingly northerly winds to portions of southwest California through this evening with the strongest winds expected across the Interstate 5 corridor and Santa Ynez Mountains.”
“Areas of north winds 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts to 35 miles per hour today and becoming northeast 15 to 30 miles per hour with gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour later tonight through Thursday morning. Strongest winds across the Santa Clarita Valley as well as the northern and western portions of the San Fernando Valley.”
Drivers of high profile vehicles are encouraged to exercise caution while driving in winds. Drivers should also be aware of reduced visibility due to blowing dust and debris from the Sand Fire burn area. Gusty winds could also bring down power lines and trees.
