The visiting Antelope Valley Marauders gave the COC women’s volleyball all it could handle during Wednesday’s ‘sophomore night’ match, but the Cougars prevailed nonetheless, capturing a 3-2 (27-25, 25-15, 22-25, 29-31, 15-6) win to conclude the regular season with an exclamation point.
Fittingly, COC sophomore Serena LeDuff led the way for the Cougars with 27.5 points on 24 kills and 20 digs.
Some notable sophomores who played their final regular season games in a COC uniform were Lauren Underwood,Kaitlyn Reiner, and Taylor Kasha.
Underwood put in a 16-point effort with 10 kills, Reiner added 11.5 points on eight kills and Kasha set up her teammates with 45 assists.
Canyons freshman Brooke Garelick also had a huge day for COC, tallying 20 points on 19 kills and 18 digs.
Head coach Lisa Hooper and the Cougars (20-3, 12-0) have now won a school record 16-games heading into the playoffs.
Canyons finished the regular season as back-to-back Western State Conference (WSC) South Champions while ranked as the No. 15 team in the state.
COC will now wait to see what opponent it draws in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women’s Volleyball Southern California Regionals, which begin Nov. 25.
Regional brackets will be released by the CCCAA over the weekend.
