The College of the Canyons men’s golf team earned its first tournament win of the season on Monday, as the Cougars emerged victorious at Western State Conference (WSC) Tournament No. 1 held at Valencia Country Club.
COC freshman Will Barnett shot a 70 on the day to finish as the tournament’s individual champion — taking that honor by three strokes.
As a team, Canyons posted a five-man score of 384, finishing 19 strokes ahead of second place Ventura College (403).
Santa Barbara City College finished in third (412), followed by Citrus (428), Allan Hancock (438), Antelope Valley (441), Glendale (476) and Bakersfield (515).
COC freshman Jaeyeol Kim finished the tournament tied for fourth place with a score of 76.
Freshman Ricardo Torres finished tied for sixth place with his score of 77.
COC freshman Ben Campbell finished tied for eighth with a score of 78, while fellow freshman Matt Cheng shot an 83 to finish in 14th place overall and round out the Canyons top-five.
Austin Dobrescu carded an 85 for the Cougars, but had his score dropped.
COC won its seventh state title under head coach Gary Peterson in 2015, with all five scoring members of that team having since moved on.
Canyons will return to the links at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, for WSC Tournament No. 2 being hosted by Santa Barbara City College at Alisal Ranch Golf Club in Solvang.
