1828 - Soledad Canyon settler John Lang born in Herkimer County, N.Y. [story]
Lang

wyattsavaikie2012The skateboarder who was struck and killed by a vehicle at a Santa Clarita intersection Friday has been identified as 14-year-old Wyatt Savaikie, an incoming freshman at Valencia High School.

Savaikie was crossing the street with his skateboard when he was hit by a car, said Investigator McCracken of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department.

The collision occured at the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Road and Seco Canyon Road at Thursday at about 2:45 p.m.

Savaikie was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. David Shoemaker of the SCV Sheriff’s Station, in a previous interview, adding, “There’s a skateboard in the scene that is broken. I don’t know if he was walking with it when he was struck or riding it at the time. We do have a statement from (the driver). He is being very cooperative with us at this point.”

Wyatt Savaikie is the son of Michael Savaikie and Teresa Savaikie, a local environmental activist.

“The incident is still being investigated but preliminary witness statements said the driver did run the red light,” said Sgt. Richard Cohen with the SCV Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Division.

All fatal crashes are presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, whose officials determine whether to charge any parties involved in the case, Cohen said.

Very sad. Feel very sorry for the person who reportedly ran the light red and hit him. That person is going to regret that for the rest of their life as will the family of Wyatt.

Very sad. Crushing for the family.

  12. Ashley don’t waste your breath this douche bag comments on every post that Santa Clarita posts. And he always loves to be negative. He is a miserable coward that hides behind his computer. I have seen All of your posts and I am tired of it. You will respond and be cocky and rude like you always do but honestly stop a child passed away instead of trying to be smug and a smart ass pray for him how does that sound.

  13. Marc Stumpo says:

Heartbreaking. Absolutely terrible. Praying for all of the family and friends.

  14. This is a very sad, completely preventable death of a child. That intersection is notoriously bad with regard to persons running that light. It would seem people simply can’t wait for the lights to cycle through again so they can safely make their turn.

Condolences to the family of this child.

  15. Very sad!! Blessings to his family

    #changethefrigginlightsnow

  49. No words… my youngest son is the same age cannot imagine what the family is going through… prayers for all involved.

  50. Prayers to him & the family .

  51. Rip buddy I will miss seeing you at the gym!!

  52. This is definitely not the first time that this has happened and it certainly won’t be the last time. Too many people in Santa Clarita drive like a bunch of jackasses. Nobody watches what they’re doing everybody goes over the speed limit like there in a hurry to get somewhere. I remember 25 years ago a student name Josh Fullbright was hit by a SUV on Seco Canyon Road but to be fair both were at fault although two wrongs don’t make a right. On that day I was walking my dog on Seco Canyon Joshua Fullbright wasn’t watching what he was doing he was just running across the street like a speeding bullet then he got hit the lady was at fault because she was going over the speed limit. People please watch what you’re doing. Sad to say that this young man lived in my neighborhood. I just feel so bad for his family that they have to deal with this.

    • I was one of the kids walking with josh on that day. This is a constant reminder of what happened on that day. Btw. The driver of the car that hit Josh was blinded by the sun and didnt see Josh. Tragic accident for both families. This year marks 25 years.

  53. In the crosswalk with his skateboard, legally.

  54. As a driver you are supposed to wait til crosswalk is clear b/4 turning. You better not attempt entering intersection in SLO until crosswalk is completely clear…you’ll get a ticket! I am sad for driver but particularly for family of young man.

  55. thoughts and prayers for this family. I don’t know what the story is with this but I do know that people driving in SCV need to slow down! I can’t enjoy my evening walk without almost getting hit. I can’t drive down my street at the 25MPH speed limit without someone zooming by passing me at 50 ! Slow down people… life is too short!

  56. Bob Dixon says:

Was not a cal trans worker

    La county public works

  57. We are beyond sad for the family…. And the driver. Words fail me.

  58. Bob Dixon says:

A sad day ! This little guy never got to grow up. Prayers with the whole family ..

  59. As a driver you are supposed to wait til crosswalk is clear b/4 turning. You better not attempt entering intersection in SLO until crosswalk is completely clear…you’ll get a ticket! I am sad for driver but particularly for family of young man. The traffic between Newhall Ranch Rd & Seco is terrible – people cutting people off & juggling for position like Indy race track – no regard for traffic rules. Local Sheriff would make quota just issuing tix here!

    • Crystal Anne says:

Completely agree! I’m originally from Massachusetts and was/continue to be shocked at the driving out here. Speed limits mean nothing! Back home there are cops hiding everywhere so people actually drive the speed limit. As a pedestrian out here there have been multiple times where cars rush right in front of me so they don’t have to stop and wait!

  60. Lauren Piper says:

    Tragic! God bless.

  61. My heart goes out to the family – such a tragedy

  62. Sad sad day… Way too close to home for many of us. Hug your babies tight.

  63. Thinking of and praying for Wyatt’s family and friends.

  64. So sad , prayers for this family for healing and strength during this most difficult time . And to one day soon find happiness even tho…

  65. Ever since the day my nephew started to walk whenever I had to cross the street with him I always talk to him and to this day I always make sure he look both ways I trained him to look to the right and to the left and then I say all clear and as he got older he got into that have it very well. Not that I’m saying that this will ever stop a tragedy like this to happen again but it will reduce the chances of it happening. As far as i’m concern no child is too young enough to learn look to your right and look to your left before crossing the street even if you’re holding their hands get him into that habit. My sister was not to king with that idea and now she’s glad I did.

  66. Nicky Cline says:

    Praying for his family

  67. sooo sad!! prayers going out to Wyatts family! RIP young man!!

  68. My heart breaks for this family. He was on my sons football team. There are so many intersections in scv that need to be re-evaluated as well as speed limits. I was the car behind the motorcyclist killed at Sierra hwy and San canyon a month or so ago. Chp need to be on Sierra hwy daily. Impatient crazy drivers passing speeding texting etcc it’s disgusting the no concern for others on that road as well as others.

  69. This is what happens when people don’t pay attention. People speed on the street way to much I take that way to my moms. I’ve sat at that light and had people passing on the right hand side and there going so fast my car shake. Absolutely tragic and senseless.

  70. Rest in peace young man.

  71. I was without a vehicle and had to take the bus or walk for a long time. I was almost hit by vehicles at crosswalk red light intersection s multiple times. I was actually fearful crossing streets…people need to slow down and look…Especially when turning right!!!

  72. I was without a vehicle and had to take the bus or walk for a long time. I was almost hit by vehicles at crosswalk red light intersection s multiple times. I was actually fearful crossing streets…people need to slow down and look…Especially when turning right!!!

  73. So very sad. Prayers for the family.

  74. So sad for this family. I can’t even imagine a loss like this. If we all would just slow down and pay more attention to our surroundings when we drive lives could be saved!

  82. Judy Thorne says:

I don’t know the family or young man but my prayers go out to you all

  83. Tami Marie says:

I have seen so many comments assuming certain things..the investigation is just starting. What I do know is that a child is gone and so many lives have changed in a blink of an eye..including the driver. I think it’s safe to assume though that this was not a callous intentional act. Accidents happen and this is truly heartbreaking.

    • I agree, if I was the driver and I have been close to hitting some carless children running or boarding with no reguard to the street. I feel horrified by the thought of the boys death and tons of love to the family wow just too much

  84. This is so sad…a beautiful life cut short. Prayers go out for the family.

He was way too young to go. I could only imagine the pain he felt before he died and what his family is going through. Rest in paradise, Wyatt.

  138. So so sad!! :( :just terrible

  139. Anonymous says:

Omg near my home! People are crazy in that intersection just today someone was honking like crazy because i stop and waited for pedestrian to start crossing. Drivers you need to calm down plus I feel Santa Clarita speed limits need to be reduced..

  140. My thoughts go to the Savaikie family at this difficult time………

  141. Prayers for him and his family and for the driver of the car who will live with this their whole life. So heartbreaking.

  142. Sad that it takes a death to get things done right. When my kids were in elementary school they wouldn’t provide a crossing guard for the kids unless there was at least one death first. They don’t seem to go where the real problems are in this valley. They just wait until they are asked to respond after the fact.

  143. Donna Hansel says:

So very sad for the boy and his family. RIP…Sadness too for the man who hit and killed him. He will have that horrible picture in his mind forever.

  144. Rest peacefully, sweet Wyatt. My prayers and deepest condolences to Wyatt’s family, and to the driver.

  145. Such a beautiful little boy! So sorry!

  146. Heartbreaking! Prayers for the family!

  147. Bless his sweet spirit and condolences to his family!!!

  148. Summer vacation is such a dangerous time for kids. We lost two kids from our school district this summer from accidents.

  149. Teresa Savaikie says:

My Gentle Giant WAS in the sidewalk. We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring and love for our child. He was beautiful inside and out and anyone who ever met him and had the privilege to know him is better off for it. Even teachers, kids, community members, neighbors ALL loved him and we were so honored and incredibly privileged to have had him for those almost 15 years,

    • Julie says:

I’m in tears right now for you. I drove by after the accident and now that I see the sweet boy that is gone from this earth ..it makes me think…it could have been one of my own. How quickly a life can be taken. Praying for your family and I’m going to hug my five boys a little tighter tonight. You son is starting another adventure in heaven. Peace to you.

  150. Thoughts and Prayers to family and all that knew this precious child.

  151. Rest In Peace Young Man!

  152. We need to talk with the city counsel person and demand this intersection be changed in honor of him.

  153. The traffic patterns and lights of SCV need to be changed with the booming population of SCV.

  154. Absolutely horrific. This poor family lost their beautiful son and the driver and his family have to live with this as well. Terrible.

  157. Eva Whitney says:

I am so sorry, this is heartbreaking, I cannot wrap my head around the horror, the pain and the loss…

  158. Liz Campo says:

    Rest in peace angel!

People people!!!! WAKE UP.. stop texting and start acting like a real human being. If you need to do talk so urgently with others then park your dang car .. stop drinking and driving .. use your brain!

This absolutely breaks my heart.. people live to live.. do not take that away because of your damn selfishness. YES I advocate NO TEXTING and NO DRINKING.. this is getting ridiculous.

  159. So, so sad. Thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

  160. So, so sad. Thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

  161. I’m extremely sorry about this but why was Wyatt riding his skateboard? You look both ways before stepping out and not on a skateboard. Fourteen year olds don’t think. I’m sure not one person on here hasn’t coasted thru a light that turns red. The whole sequence is tragic.

  162. Kyle I am so sorry!

  163. Kyle I am so sorry!

  164. Such a sad story thoughts and prayers out to the family . I’ve lived in Santa Clarita for 34 yrs and it seems lately it one hit after another. I stopped riding my bike recently due to almost getting hit 3 times in cross walks in SCV. Our town is over populated and everyone is in such a hurry . I hope the driver gets his license taken away .

  165. Teri Cuadros says:

    Praying for his family

  166. Heart wrenching. :'(

  167. Steven Sandy says:

This is so sad and preventable. As a driver you need to be aware of your surroundings. It’s summer , lots of kids running around. God bless you little man and your family..

  171. Lorrie Joyce says:

    Oh noooo. Our innocent children.

  172. Lorrie Joyce says:

As a victim of someone talking on their cell phone while driving … Please please don’t text or talk while driving. Ever !! I can’t believe how
many people I still see doing it on our highways !!! Even with ALL the public announcements and awareness out there. People have the ” it’s not going to happen to me” attitude. Well I hope it doesn’t. And I hope you’re never the victim of it either !!!

  173. This is so tragic. RIP and prayers for his friends and loved ones.

  174. That’s crazy, they need to change that light to have it red for cars turning left if people are crossing.

  175. Candi Smith says:

So sorry for both this you man, his family and the driver. Life changed for all of the in a matter of seconds.

  176. So sad. It’s because half the people in this valley I see texting or in their Facebook while driving. They are paying attention to everything else but the road

  177. Madonna Dawe says:

Did they get the sob im deeply for his family.

  178. John Gilbert says:

We learned in school to always walk in a crosswalk. If you’re mounted on a bike in a crosswalk, you’re not a pedestrian but covered as a vehecle in the Vehicle Code. Skateboards? Take your chances.

  179. Harriet Sol says:

What a terrible loss…children have to be so careful and those intersections are so big…Prayers to the family.

  180. Love you buddy. Never had the chance to really hang out with you but your sister is family to me. Rest in paradise my brother. I know you’ll be watching over all of us from up above.

  181. Yes you do look both ways… Absolutely. He was in a cross walk, plain and simple. Cars do NOT have the right of way. Shame on you for putting this on the 14 year old. Maybe you need to reflect on your own driving. Yellow slow down, red is stop. Turn right on a red, stop and look for anyone crossing in the Cross walk and do not speed.

  182. 14 year old don’t always think but adult licensed drivers should…. Always.

  183. So sad, thoughts and prayers to his family.

  184. Rest in Peace.our condolences to his Family.

  185. I’m so sorry for you and his families loss. So very sad. So heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with Wyatt’s family and friends.

  189. He was a good friend of my grandson Zack Hirst. So sad a tragic.

  190. My heart is so sad for his family. My prayers are with you.

  191. Teddi Lynn says:

A senseless loss. That signal needed to be changed a long time ago. Now a child is gone & a family suffers. My heart & prayers go out to this dear family.

  192. Teddi Lynn says:

The speed limit is too high on to many streets. So many people make turns in front of others causing accidents. Kim is right. Intersections need to be re-evaluated.

  208. So sad. .. my heart breaks for the family and friends who knew Wyatt as well. Good looking kid who has left this world way to soon. The blonde hair and piercing blue eyes remind me of my lil guy. No parent should have to bury their baby. It was sad seeing the memorial as I drove by tonight. He sure has alot of people who loved him. Love and Prayers to all. RIP sweet boy

  209. kathy says:

For all of you people who have left kind words you will never truly know what they mean to the family of a lost child. For the rest who make stupid and insensitive statement such as the first one by Stephen who by the way also made a very stupid comment on a story written about the loss of my 17 year old son, which this site had the intelligence to delete, the rest of you should be ashamed of your selves. No one can possible understand the depth of the loss of a beautiful child with so much potential unless they are living it and there is no room what’s so ever for your comments. To Wyatt and his family I am so deeply sorry for your endless longing to be together. Please know you will always have your beautiful son with you in your body, mind and soul. Be grateful knowing he knows how much you love him and find your strength to continue on with acts of kindness to honor that beautiful smile.

  210. Thougths and prayers for this family on the lost of their son Wyatt.

  211. Shirley says:

Driver needs to go to jail. People need to slow down in this town. Everyone is always in a damn rush. Our kids aren’t even safe. RIP Wyatt.

  213. Ian O'Hara says:

People don’t know how to stinking drive in Santa clarita. Maybe this will make them think twice

  214. I wonder what will happen to the driver…

  215. My heart is heavy for this family. What a charming and sweet looking young man RIL. I pray God heals their pain and comforts and a strengthens them. I hope his death can bring about a change in the way the signal lights turn for pedestrians.

  216. There’s a candle light vigil for him tonight at concerts in the park at 7pm if anyone is interested in coming.

  217. Tragic. Prayers to his family. :(

  218. Tragic. Prayers to his family. :(

  219. C. Harris says:

So many want to help in any way possible, please let us. God’s is holding your child in His loving arms protecting him from any harm. Our hearts are with you wrapping you in care!

Prayers and strength to the family of the victim. I can not imagine what this family is going through with this horrific loss. Your son will be in our prayers.

  221. So sorry for this families loss…unimaginable tragedy. Will be praying this family

  222. Wyatt’s parents I’m praying for you! people please be careful considerate drivers

  223. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family

  224. Emily says:

I loved him. He was a very nice and genuine person. He got knocked of his skateboard

  225. carmen says:

I heard the driver was an elderly man and his vehicle displayed a handicapped placard. I think the driving abilities of elderly folks and anyone with any type impairment or handcicap should be tested more often. What a tragedy! My heart goes out to the family. What a beautiful boy.

  226. Teresa Savaikie says:

Thank you for the kind words posted here about our son Wyatt. He was a beautiful son, inside and out. He was taught early in life to use crosswalks. Initial reports have our son in the crosswalk with the green light to walk and so he did. It it is reported that the driver ran right through the red light. He was being responsible. We appreciate all of your kind words but if you have nothing nice to say please try to keep those thoughts to yourself. Wyatt has two older siblings and this is such a painful and unbelievably difficult reality to face and accept at this time. There are no words to express the pain we are going through, it is and feels unreal to me, it has not sunken in, for my heart cannot quite deal with this reality. I’m still waiting to wake up from an awful, awful dream. My mind tells me one thing but my heart cannot take the pain. Please hug those you love as often as you can. Wyatt and I exchanged “I love you’s” just before he left for the gym. As we all tell each other before one family member goes out, we love you and be safe, be careful and so far it seems that our 14 year old son was doing just that and still he is not here with us. It’s easier to write about him in a matter of a fact way right now because I am unable to come to terms with his loss just yet.
