The Santa Clarita Sunrise Rotary Club, with the help of the Rotary Interact Club at Saugus High School (sponsored by the SCV Rotary Club), has created a Peace Garden on campus.
The garden is for all students to use as a place to rest and find peace, talk out solutions when having difficulty with relationships, and work out peaceful solutions to problems.
An opening celebration and dedication will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.
Background
Colene Riffo initiated the project in 2005 when she participated in an online peace conference and learned about ISPG (International School Peace Gardens). She approached the Saugus High School administration with the idea and was given permission to proceed with the understanding the school district would not cover its cost.
Progress was slow, and when she joined the Santa Clarita Sunrise Rotary Club in 2014, she told the members of her dream of putting Peace Gardens at all of the SCV’s high school campuses. The club wrote and received a grant from Rotary to establish the first Peace Garden at Saugus.
The Peace Garden features a large boulder with a plaque depicting Rotary’s 4-way Test – “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned?”
It is hoped the students will use this test as a guide in making decisions in their lives and their work with others.
The Sunrise club, along with the SCV Rotary Club, have already chosen the next recipient for the Peace Garden and is writing another grant to Rotary for its funding.
