The West Ranch and Valencia boys volleyball teams are in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Valencia is making its 12th trip in a row to the quarters after sweeping Calvary Chapel. Eric Ensing led the fourth-seeded Vikings in kills with 18. Jake Ferry had 34 assists.
The West Ranch volleyball team is making its first appearance in the quarterfinals after a stunning four-game win over San Juan Hills. West Ranch won the third game of the match, 31-29, before closing it out with a convincing, 25-15, fourth game.
Dalton Peck led the Wildcats with 22 kills. Teammate Tanner Skabelund had 18 kills.
West Ranch plays third-seeded Laguna Beach on Saturday.
In high school swimming, Saugus freshman Abbey Weitzeil is heading to the CIF Southern Section Division I finals as the top qualifier in the 50 freestyle. She is also the No. 2 qualifier in the 100 freestyle at the meet at Riverside City College.
Weitzeil set the school and Foothill League record in the 50 freestyles in prelims, winning the race in 23.14 seconds
She heads 11 swimmers from the Foothill League who made it to the finals of the Division I meet.
Nine swimmers from Hart are in the finals. Sophia Fiscella is the lone swimmer from Valencia to qualify for the finals. She will swim in the 100 backstroke. The finals are on Saturday night.
In high school baseball, Saugus came up with a huge win, 2-1, over West Ranch, the recently crowned Foothill League champs.
Saugus starter Chad Bennett held the West Ranch bats in check, throwing six effective innings before giving way to Justin Donatella to close out the game.
The Valencia baseball team powered its way to a 9-1 win over Canyon. Kyle Sanchez hit a three-run home run and AJ Balta drove in three runs for Valencia.
The Golden Valley baseball team ended the season on a high note, beating Hart, 3-2, for its first league win. Joseph Garrett scored the winning run on a botched suicide squeeze in the sixth inning.
In high school softball, Hart’s Paxton Provost slugged three home runs and paced the Indians to a 10-4 win over Canyon. She drove in four runs and scored four runs.
Valencia’s Carly Mortensen pitched a no-hitter against Golden Valley. The Vikings won 9-0. Mortensen struck out 13 and Karlie Habitz hit a home run and drove in four runs.
The West Ranch softball team beat Saugus, 3-1. Kylie Sorenson had two hits, including a home run, for West Ranch.
In the NBA playoffs, the Lakers failed to eliminate the Denver Nuggets again. The Lakers lost Game 6 of the Western Conference playoffs, 113-96, to the Nuggets and will play Game 7 at Staples Center on Saturday night.
