Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station deputies and the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team responded to a call about a child who was stuck on an approximate eight foot high ledge along the Haskell Canyon Trail, and was afraid to come down.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, the mother of the local 11-year-old boy called the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station because it was starting to get dark outside and she was getting concerned about her son not being able to come down from the ledge.

The mother said that her son and a friend had left their Valencia residence that evening for a short hike. As they approached a trailhead, she momentarily stopped while her son and friend began walking on two trails that were parallel to each other.

Her friend briefly lost sight of her son and when her friend crested a hill, she observed him hiking up farther.  The trail he was on was at a higher elevation than her trail.

He eventually ended up on an approximate eight foot high ledge and was afraid to come down.

Santa Clarita Valley Station deputies responded to the location and immediately contacted the Search and Rescue Team.

As darkness set in, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputy Adam Lagabed hiked up the trail to try to locate the missing parties.  After finding them, he was able to coax the 11-year-old boy to slide down the ledge, telling him that he would catch him.

The boy complied with his request and slid down the ledge, suffering no injuries.

Shortly after the boy came down, the Search and Rescue Team arrived on scene and all parties were safely escorted out of the canyon.
