Cameron Smyth
Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, issued the following statement Wednesday in response to the state budget, which was sent to the governor’s desk with no Republican support:
“I opposed the budget bills because I disagree with the priorities that have been advanced by the majority party throughout the budget process. The last two weeks have been spent trying to figure out how to reduce proposed cuts to health and welfare programs, without any reductions made to proposed education cuts. Additionally, I think it’s irresponsible to pass a budget that relies on billions of dollars in tax revenue that is unlikely to materialize.”
“This budget is a win for public employee unions and a loss for our kids. While the Democrats give lip service to protecting education, they continue to place education on the chopping block while taking no meaningful action to address the unfunded pension liabilities that plague our state. Instead, they resort to ballot box extortion, threatening to cut education even further if a massive tax increase isn’t passed in November. I won’t support that kind of solution, and my sense is that voters won’t either.”
Assemblyman Cameron Smyth is chairman of the Assembly Local Government Committee, and represents the 38th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley and Glendale.
Sen. Sharon Runner
State Senator Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster, issued the following statement regarding the passage of the Democrats’ budget:
“After much fanfare and public assurance by Democrat lawmakers that the budget is balanced and fiscally sound, the 21 measures that accompany the budget were passed and are on their way to the Governor’s office.
“This budget is based on the unrealistic assumption that the proposed tax increases will pass in the November election. And if the taxes don’t pass, which we all know they won’t, Democrat lawmakers inserted ‘trigger cuts’ that overwhelmingly target education.
“These gimmicks are giving beneficiaries of state programs like schools and welfare recipients false hope.
“As elected officials, we have the fiduciary duty to be honest with the public by making the tough, but necessary, cuts to balance the state’s budget.
“By passing a facade of a budget, the Democrat-controlled Legislature lost an opportunity to win back the public’s trust. I hope the Governor vetos these measures.”
Senator Sharon Runner represents the residents of the Seventeenth Senate District, which includes portions of Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern and San Bernardino Counties. Contact her office at 916-651-4017, or via email at senator.runner@sen.ca.gov.
