The California Department of Foresty and Fire Protection, known as CAL FIRE, reports that the fast moving Post Fire that broke out in Gorman on Saturday, June 15 around 1:47 p.m. has reached 14,625 acres and is now 8% contained. The latest news was reported by CAL FIRE at 8:26 p.m. on sunday, June 16. The fire continues to move south towards Pyramid Lake.
The fire reportedly started at Ralph’s Ranch and Gorman School roads near the 5 Freeway. It’s unknown how the fire started, but video from a parking lot in the area showed multiple cars burned.
Evacuation orders are in place for areas west of Interstate 5 between Pyramid Lake and Gorman. This includes the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area. County fire officials said about 1,200 people were evacuated from Hungry Valley State VRA Park.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire, but at least two structures were damaged, according to fire officials. No homes have been reported to have been lost.
CAL FIRE reports 1,148 personnel have been assigned to fight the fire with seven helicopters, 114 fire engines, 11 dozers, 14 water tenders and 34 crews.
Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the State are flying fire suppression missions as conditions allow.
According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the Post Fire has been ranked as the state’s largest wildfire so far this year.
The South Coast AQMD issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory for the Santa Clarita Valley and Castaic areas as northwesterly winds are expected to push smoke from the Post Fire southeast toward Santa Clarita, the San Fernando Valley, and parts of the Angeles National Forest through Sunday morning.
The NWS forecast calls for strong winds in the fire zone to continue through Monday morning, with wind gusts of 50 to 65 miles per hour and minimum humidity of 15% to 20%.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the I-5 corridor in Los Angeles county and Ventura Coounty mountains until 5 p.m. Monday due to the long duration of strong NW-N winds and low humidities.
