A car fire sparked a brush fire that spread quickly in hot, dry, breezy conditions in upper Bouquet Canyon near Spunky Canyon Road.

The car fire was reported Thursday at 6:16 p.m., and the brush fire was first reported at 37039 Bouquet Canyon Road.

The fire was initially reported as moving “extremely fast” in heavy brush. It jumped Bouquet Canyon Road (from south side to north side). It was considered to have a large 1,000 to 2,000-acre potential.

But an equally quick air attack and hose lay suppressed the forward progression of the flames. Knockdown was reported at 7:20 p.m. Hand crews and dozer teams continued to cut fire breaks, and a Forest Service fire crew was planning to spend the night patrolling the burn area.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided engines and firefighters from Santa Clarita and Palmdale for structure defense, along with two Firehawk helicopters.

U.S. Forest Service responded with 8 engines, 1 hand crew and 2 water tenders. A Forest Service firefighter sustained an injury, the extent of which is unknown.

A DC-10 air tanker was called in to drop 11,600 pounds of retardant per load.

The Forest Service reported 25 acres burned.

Evacuations to Highland High School in the Antelope Valley were effected in the Lost Valley area, southwest of Leona Valley in the Angeles National Forest, but were called off by 7:30 p.m.

Bouquet and San Francisquito Canyon Roads were closed at Elizabeth Lake Road and also on the Santa Clarita side.

Animal Care and Control was called out to handle large animal evacuations to Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

Three patients from the vehicle rollover were transported to a hospital.

Looks like a late model civic. Surprised it could catch fire. Did they pull off the road and the catalytic converter touching dry grass start the blaze?
