Canyons had an outstanding day. Things got started with Abbey Weitzeil making it through to the finals of the 100 free. Granted she snuck in the eighth spot, but the fact is she is there and has a great shot at a medal. She will be swimming in the outside lane tomorrow.
Often you hear people complain about the outside lane, but in sprinting, there is so much water disruption in the center of the pool, anyone not in the lead is trying to break through a heavy wake. A great swimmer in an outside lane does not have that problem.
The last time Abbey swam in an outside lane was in 2014 when she broke the American record in the 100 free. Therefore, if there is one thing we know, she is amazing in the outside lane.
About an hour later we had the men’s 100 free final and Santo Condorelli swimming for Canada. Santo just finished 4th, one spot off the medal stand in the 100 free but led most of the way. There is little doubt that he will be a medal contender in the 50 free.
Santo came to Canyons more than a year ago specifically to train with Coach Coley Stickles and his “unique:” style of training. We put quotes around unique because some might think our head coach is crazy. People see his swimmers running and jumping and doing strange exercises, but then again, how many other coaches put a man and woman on the blocks of the biggest venue in the world? Two finalists in the Olympics in the same event, who could have imagined that? Actually, we’re pretty sure Coley did.
These two swimmers have a lot more work to do in the next few days and we get the idea that we will see them again in finals in the 50 free.
