Despite notching 11 hits, the College of the Canyons baseball team was shut out by Cerritos College 1-0 at Kincaid Field on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, Canyons falls to 1-1 overall, while Cerritos improves to 1-0.
Canyons starter Joseph Cloney (0-1) took the loss after surrendering an unearned run in the fifth inning. Cloney threw seven innings, allowing one walk and seven strikeouts. Armando Esparza threw a scoreless inning in relief of Cloney, while striking out one batter.
COC was shutout by its opponent for the first time this season. The 11 hits came from six players, as James Krauskopf was 4-of-5 and David Oppenheim went 2-of-3.
The Falcons scored the game’s only run when COC’s Dylan Freyre committed a throwing error, allowing Cerritos’ Johnny Marti to score.
Canyons’ best opportunity to score came in the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out. After Jose Haros walked to open the inning, Vigo and Krauskopf both singled to advance Haros to third base. Oppenheim and Ramos both struck out ending the Cougars threat to score.
Canyons returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they travel to Mt. SAC for a 11 a.m. game.
