1903 - President Teddy Roosevelt visits Gov. Henry Gage at Acton Hotel [story]

BOYS TEAM

The only Foothill League boys teams to compete over this weekend were Hart and Valencia High. Hart looked a little rusty; however, their team performance was still good enough to keep them in the runner-up spot behind Golden Valley High. Valencia, meanwhile, could challenge Canyon High, who finished fourth at Foothill League #1 two weeks back but didn’t look as strong at the Kenny-Staub Invitational last weekend, if they run like they at Woodward Park yesterday. Golden Valley, Saugus, Canyon and West Ranch High boys were idle this weekend and will compete on Thursday at Foothill League #2, taking place at Central Park once again.

BOYS INDIVIDUAL

The only three major moves this weekend came from Hart High. Senior Austin O’Neil continued his best season, becoming the 30th Santa Clarita Valley male to break 16 minutes at the famed Woodward Park, while teammate Billy Walker, just a junior, was the Indian’s #2 runner in a solid clocking over the 5,000-meter course. The team’s #1 runner, Sam Peckham, was less unfortunate, showing great inconsistency. The senior, who was out for a majority of the 2011 year due to a stress fracture, was the teams #4 runner yesterday on his first time out at Woodward Park.

GIRLS TEAM

Valencia High was the lone squad on the girls side to compete this weekend, running at the Clovis Invitational. Although the team had a semi-off day, it was still a great team performance. The rest of the Foothill League will join the Vikings at Central Park for Foothill League #2 on Thursday afternoon.

GIRLS INDIVIDUAL

Valencia High’s duo of Maddie Dignadice and Arianna Michaels had solid performance over the weekend, both clocking sub-19 minute 5,000 meter personal bests. Dignadice was first, breaking the school record by one second and making her the 20th fastest female in Santa Clarita Valley history. Meanwhile, Michaels crossed 20 seconds back, to dip five seconds under the barrier, 24th in valley history. The pair became the 24th and 25th females in Santa Clarita Valley history to break the 19-minute barrier at Woodward Park in Fresno.
